Darnell McDonald is the most popular Red Sox player in Sox Nation, atleast for one night.

A backup outfielder called up from Pawtucket late this afternoon to take the roster spot of Jacoby Ellsbury who was placed on the DL hit a pinch hit home run in the eight to tie the game and hit a long single off the green monster in the 9th to win it.

The improbable win came after Texas set a franchise record with 9 stolen bases in the first five innings off Tim Wakefield, however they managed little of anything offensively after that.

McDonald came on for Josh Reddick (another call-up today replacing DL bound Mike Cameron) in the eighth inning and hit a 2-run shot over the green monster to tie the game at six.

In the ninth Kevin Youkilis led off with a single and took second on a passed ball. Bill Hall got down a sacrifice to get Youkilis to third. Mike Lowell was intentionally walked to set up the double play for Adrian Beltre who popped out to first. Team Captain Jason Varitek walked on four pitches setting up the McDonald game winning at bat.
