Big Brown's trainer came out and essentially blamed Kent Desormeaux for the incredible first-to-last performance in the Belmont. While he didn't say as much, I'm convinced that someone "got" to Desormeaux. Given the fact that medical exams showed no further damage to Brown's cracked hoof, that seems to be the only explanation.

The race was fixed.

And the U.S. military is holding several alien beings at Area 51 in Nevada...

Big Brown's trainer is a major league asshole. Guaranteed a win, then blames everyone but himself for the loss.

You think maybe not patching the hoof until last minute, or not being able to work him out in the days leading to race had anything to do with it????

Jon, the doctors said that there was NOTHING wrong with BB.

I fully agree with you about BB's trainer being a jerk for that. But that doesn't absolve Desormeaux of blowing the race. BB looked good on camera up to the point where KD pulled back. Looked VERY fishy on tape.

And, no, Hogan, Quark isn't being held in NV. If he were, you'd know FOR SURE about it because he'd be swindling everyone in this country for all they're worth. That's what Ferengis do!

Yeah. Doctors said there was nothing wrong with the horse in the Kentucky Derby too, until both front legs shattered....

I saw closeup pictures of that hoof....there was NO WAY that horse should have been racing.

In addition to the patch, Big Brown will be running on anabolic steroids. The colt receives a monthly injection of Winstrol, which is known to increase appetite and weight.

The steroid is legal at New York tracks, although Dutrow has said if it was banned, he would stop using it on Big Brown and all his other horses.

The New York Times said trainer Barclay Tagg plans to run Tale of Ekati on steroids Saturday. Many therapeutic medications are administered to horses, and as long as they clear their systems by race time, they aren't reported or detected.

Winstrol is the same steroid for which Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson tested positive at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, when he was stripped of his gold medal. More recently, Roger Clemens' former trainer, Brian McNamee, said he injected the pitcher with Winstrol in 1998.

At a time when drugs are the scourge of the sport, Big Brown’s trainer Richard Dutrow freely admits his horse is getting the steroid Winstrol once a month. Dutrow does not exactly have a spotless record when it comes to drugs. Among other suspensions and fines, he received a 60-day suspension for mepivacaine, a drug that basically allows sore horses to run without feeling any pain. Dutrow has routinely improved horses over the years, sometimes in spectacular fashion, and may have questioned how he does it.

Add to that the fact that Dutrow was fined for falsifying workouts on Queen’s Plate winner Wild Desert in 2005, after the owner admitted he had made over $100,000 betting on the horse, and you have to wonder about Big Brown’s foot problem again. Is it for real or is it just a smoke screen to get the odds up? And if the foot is bad will it be uncharacteristically good for the race?
