I sort of adopted the Pads while I was stationed in San Diego, though I couldn't stand their style of play under Bochy. I've always enjoyed getting a guy on and getting him around with steals and hit-and-runs vice waiting for the jack that often never comes.
That said, my favorite Padres are Tony Gwynn, Sr., David Wells, Jake Peavy, and Trevor Hoffman, though none of them are in a Pads uni today.

I agree. Bochy was terrible and he brought that same spinless play with him to SF. All those players you mentioned were fun to watch. Wells was just a rent-a-vet so I am not too high on him. I'll never forget the run the Padres had in 98 when they went to the WS. Good times.

SD: on a whim, I called up the Internet 1090 connection to hear Coach. Unfortunately, ever since the pre-game show, it's been nothing but Sporting News Radio. What happened to the game? Is this a common occurrence?
EDIT: I just noticed a potential typo in your response, but an argument could be made that even the typo is correct. Bochy is both spineless and spinless. That is, his Giants don't and his Padres certainly didn't spin around the bases very fast.

Yeah I meant spineless. I will add that the Padres have been "spinning" around the bases. They have been stealing bases left and right. It brings a very fun ball to watch.
I'm not sure about the radio stations lately. I know the Padres switched stations a few years back and with all the drops in commercial revenue, stations have been axing high salary radio personalities lately.

SD, isn't Randy Jones supposed to have some outstanding barbecue stuff in the outfield? That might be the way to go, Hen. Jones is a former Padre pitcher who is on the pre-game show and has a concession somewhere in the park. Also, Oggi's Pizza (formerly Del Mar Stuft Pizza) has a concession in the park; I don't know how well they translate to stadium food, but at their main restaurant in Del Mar, they had outstanding pizza the night I met "Coach" John Kentera when he was doing his High School Scoreboard Show on location as he's wont to do during football season.
Incidentally, Coach Kentera (a former college baseball coach who knows his way around a ton of sports) forever endeared himself to me while I was stationed at Camp Pendleton when he checked up on Lodi football for me. That's WAY outside the San Diego listening area, so that was way cool. Try getting Hacksaw to do that. He'll just make something up to make it sound like he knows everything. I found that out when he did that to me about Sac State football. Couldn't even get our star running back's name right. That's the difference: if Coach doesn't know, he'll tell you flat out and then find it for you in a reasonable amount of time. Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton will lie through his teeth to get through the call.

Probably, but I never shell out that kind of cash at a ball game. I take my flask and have a beer or two if it runs dry. But plenty of bar and grills within a drunken stumble. The gaslamp district is but a block away and if you are in the mood for some good pizza and top notch eye candy, I recommend Bar Basic:

Randy Jones BBQ was way better at the Q imo. Now its located past the stands in left and doesn't seem nearly as good as I remember. Oggi's is still awesome, however I don't think they have a designated place in Petco. They just opened a new one across the street from the anti-submarine warfare buildings in Point Loma.

I'm a little late on this but I got to see the Oswalt-Latos pitching duel this past Friday night. I take my dad to the ball park for his Father's Day gift every year and we had a blast. It was fvcking amazing. Oswalt had a no-no going through 5 and I think there was a total of 3 hits in the game until the bottom of the eight when the Padres went on a 2 out no one on rally against the pathetic Astros bullpen. Scotty "Cap't Clutch" Hairston laced a bases loaded single into left for two runs to ice the game. Latos went 8 shutout innings and handed it over to Bell for the save. The final was 3-0 Padres. I keep waiting for the Padres to unravel but their pitching is holding it together. I hope they can hold on for the rest of the long season ahead.

SD: That's another major beef I have with "modern" baseball. The starting pitcher gets pulled from a game he's either dominating or is at least holding his own merely because of this bogus stat called "pitch count," and then the bullpen blows up. The stupidest thing I've ever seen. The removal of a starting pitcher should go based on game situation, NOT pitch count. Let him pitch through two jams, and then yank him on the third. Don't let the bullpen blow it. This "six innings is a 'quality start'" mentality has GOT to go. A "quality start" in my book is a complete game, or at least getting through 8 before the closer takes over.
And before you smack me for being an idiot, Joe, there's at least one MLB executive who agrees with me, and he's getting some major success with it: HOFer Nolan Ryan, who thinks the pitch count stuff is a bunch of hogwash. Which it is.

Stats have shown that pitchers who are worked a lot (specifically young arms) tend to become injury prone in the following seasons. Also Mark prior is a case and point for pitch counts. Any Prior fans can thank Dusty Baker for destroying his arm by allowing him to throw 120+ consecutive pitch games a few seasons ago. He was never the same after that.

Padres pulled it out against the Dodgers tonight. I landed some tickets and had a blast. Just under 41k showed up.

The Padres and Giants have a showdown this weekend. The Padres have completely owned them and are 7-1 ( I think it's 7 wins, but I'm sure they only lost once thus far). Still plenty of games left but this would be huge for the Padres if they can win 2 of 3 or pull off a sweep. I'm looking forward to this series, it should be a good one.

Already one in the till for the Pads. Dumb-Dumb Bochy and his crew blew a 2-0 early lead and they did nothing against Gregerson, Adams, and Bell in crunch time. Pads win 3-2 as Bell gets his 22nd straight save, which is a Pads record for closers not named Mr. Hells Bells. I was amused when 1090 played a Bell montage to the classic TV theme Saved by the Bell. While I haven't seen a live Pads game in several years, I suspect that Bell uses this as his entrance music. SD, could you confirm?

I don't know how the Padres have done it, but they've done it. A pitching staff that's good, and young too, good bullpen. Some decent hitting.

Yeah me either. Huge turn around from last season. This should get Bud Black at least a mention for Manager of the Year. If the pitching holds (if been saying this all year so why stop now) they will be fine and with their bullpen (best in the NL, possible even the league) they could make a run at a pennant. Their hitting on the other hand is streaky. They have been stranding a lot of runner lately but fortunately it hasn't cost them in the win column. The Tejada and Ludwick trades were low risk trades but are shaping up to be pretty solid acquisitions.
Oh and they picked up another game on the Giants today. Man that $30 i put on the Pads to win the whole thing (I got 10 to 1 odds) this year while I was in Vegas is looking better and better every day.

Not many teams do much against the Gregerson-Adam-Bell trio. I have to admit, Bell is by far the weakest link in that lineup. No Bell doesn't enter to that song, he enters to "Blow Me Away" by Breaking Benjamin. Not that good of a song to enter to but whatever. When the Padres win they do shoot off some fireworks and have a bunch of flames go off on top of the batters eye.

That was a painful sweep by the Phils. Good thing the Giants weren't able to capitalize against the Dback's and they still hold a 5 game lead.

That sweep has now turned into an eight-game losing streak, which the Rockies will hopefully extend to 10 by the end of the weekend.

Coach Kentera mentioned an interesting factoid last night. The Pads have 29 games left. They can go 14-15 the rest of the way and still win the division. The Giants would have to go 17-10 to overtake them. It's a little worse for the Rockies, and the Trolley Dodgers would have to border on the miraculous to get the job done.
That says nothing about the Pads' performance IN the playoffs, though.
For SDHornet: What happened to the HS Scoreboard Show last night? That was why I tuned in, and it wasn't there.
