The Super Bowl is coming to the New York City area.
At the NFL Spring Meeting in Irving, Texas, the league's owners awarded the 2014 Super Bowl to the new $1.6 billion Meadlowlands stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. It will be the first Super Bowl played in an outdoor stadium in a cold-weather climate.

The New York/New Jersey area beat out two additional bids for the big game, one from Miami and the other from Tampa, Fla.
The NFL previously had a rule aimed at ensuring the Super Bowl was played in good weather, or in a climate-controlled dome. The league made an exception for New York/New Jersey this time, largely because it has a new $1.6 billion stadium to showcase, and it fits commissioner Roger Goodell's focus on trying to adopt a few new innovations for the league. The Super Bowl city's minimum temperature/roof requirement was set aside on a onetime basis only.

Mixed feelings about this one. I can see both sides of the arguement. Some of the most memorable games were ones played in bad weather, but I think risking snow/ice/sleet/wind is a bad idea. Chances are it will be 40 degrees and breezy, but we won't see this that year...

That's just stupid. I hope it's 40 below and there's 3 feet of snow on the ground.

Maybe Jimmy Hoffa will pop up in the north end zone at halftime!

I have to be able to make some kind of money on this? Giants stadium is 7 miles from my house.

I just find it annoying because the NFL bitched for years that teams couldn't host the Super Bowl unless they were domes or warm weather. Hell even Dallas couldn't before the new stadium.

NYC (really NJ) gets it because its near NY. Yet Seattle has a great stadium and they will never get it.

Totally agree. DC built a new stadium in the early 90s (largest in the league, with milder weather than NY), Baltimore a few years later, Pittsburgh and Philly a few years after that, yet where are the other northeast Super Bowls?

Willie: I've wanted a Lambeau Super Bowl for YEARS. We've had NFL Championship Games in the snow before. Not a thing wrong with that idea in my book. I'd LOVE to see a Super Bowl blizzard. Sunny SBs are SO boring....

I've always supported that the idea that the Super Bowl should rotate between all 32 teams.

I agree, but could imagine telling all the non-football fans that go to the Super Bowl that they'll need to spend a week partying in a place like Cleveland? I mean, I guess they did those two years in Detroit, and they had the one in ever-hopping Jacksonville, but it's not like they are clammoring to go back to those places. New York, for all the cold, will still have more than enough off-field entertainment to satisfy the jet-settters and the movers and shakers.

Well, comparing the 2 newest NFL stadiums, since Dlaas is hosting next yr's Super Bowl and now NY in 2014:

Dallas's new stadium which opened last yr by comparison is the largest domed stadium in the world, football capacity is listed at 80k, but has seated 105k, has the world's largest column-free interior and the largest high definition video screen which hangs from 20 yard line to 20 yard line......more than 3,000 Sony LCD displays throughout the luxury suites, concourses, concession areas and more, offering fans viewing options that extend beyond the action on the field," [4] and a center-hung video display board that is the largest high-definition television screen in the world. Of course, those retractable endzones are the largest in the world. Not to mention an insane 320 luxury suites (to 218 for Meadowlands stadium). The place sounds almost like the 8th wonder of the world...Yet, Dallas's new stadium was 1.3 billion to the Meadowlands 1.6. Seems like Jerry Jones got way more stadium for a good bit less less $ money than NY did.

Every single screw turned, yard of concrete poured and wire pulled in the New Meadowlands was done by a Union construction worker.

You don't do major construction in NJ unless you do it Union.

Plus the New Meadowlands is a stadium designed to house 2 home teams. That added some cost. For example - there are no permanent signs in the stadium. Everyone is digital. The entire facade of the stadium is lit with ability to make the stadium appear any color they want it. So it will look like the Jets home stadium when its a Jets home game and a Giants home stadium when its a Giants home game.

I know people who rented out their house for the week for good money when the SB was here in Tampa...

The Jets looked at a lot of different spots before agreeing to pay for half of the New Meadowlands. The West Side Stadium in Manhattan was one of the biggest pushses. The Jets/Giants are better off in the same stadium IMO. They share the costs and the stadium would other sit empty in the off weeks. Its a win-win for everyone.

Plus, could you imagine what kind of atmosphere it will be if the 2014 SB is Jets vs. Giants. That would be great.

The problem with it, dane, is that it puts the Jets in the same situation as the Clippers. Admittedly, they're not run by an ignoramus of the magnitude of Donald Sterling. But they're still second-fiddle in any stadium shared with the Giants.

If they keep having seasons like last year it won't be nearly as bad as it has been in the past. They also aren't playing in Giants Stadium anymore which is good.

But in all honesty, the Jets could have the greatest stadium in the world and they'd still be second fiddle in NY to the Giants. The same goes for the Nets, Islanders and Mets. The Mets are the prime example of this. I will gladly say that Citi Field is a nicer ball park then the new Yankee Stadium is. They're still second fiddle by a mile.
