Red Sox Question, serious this time

Heard last night they signed a pitcher off our local independent minor league team and assigned him to AA

Any truth to that?

Would be a pretty big leap, I would sort of consider the Frontier League to be something below A ball

There can be quality players out there.

Daniel Nava went undrafted out of shcool and played independent ball. in late 2007 Boston purchased his rights for $1 from the Golden Baseball League.

A little over two seasons later he was called up to Boston and all he did was take his first pitch seen in the majors and hit a grand slam.

With injured players making their way back he was just optioned back to AAA but he heads back down with a .286 average a .381 OBP and 10 doubles to go with 16 RBI in 91 ABs.

The move would fill either two things.

a) a low cost risk for an arm they feel has potential to help them in a couple years or

b) a low cost roster fill that that rather use a player they have no major investment in as opposed to calling up a guy from A who isnt ready and harm his growth.
