Saturday was a horrible day for West Coast members of the Independent Women's Football League as East Coast teams took both the Tier I and Tier II titles.
The Montreal Blitz opened play in yesterday's Tier II North American Championship yesterday with a 9-2 win over the Bay Area Bandits in a defensive struggle. The Bandits opened scoring with a safety late in the first half (I think that's what I was told), which was matched by Montreal early in the fourth quarter. A few moments later, Montreal won the game with a touchdown.
Winning was not so difficult for the Boston Militia in the Tier I World Championship. Undefeated Boston took care of business early and often, handing the previously undefeated Sacramento Sirens their first loss of the season, 39-7. This was bad news for Sirens free safety Denise Grandison, who had previously announced her retirement at the end of the season.
The results of today's IWFL All-Star Game have not posted yet.
Props should go out to the Bandits (who made the title game in only their second season after replacing the defunct Oakland Banshees) and the Sirens (who are only two years removed from a HUGE dry spell that came after a string of three straight IWFL titles).
Congratulations to Boston and Montreal on their titles.
