when a manager or coach is suspended from a baseball game (or even after they are ejected), they obviously can't be on the field or in the dugout. But they're usually still at the ballpark (up in a suite, or in the back of the clubhouse) watching the game.

I wonder if there is anyone there making sure that they aren't in contact with the staff in the dugout (via cellphone or radio or something). or perhaps that is allowed, and the suspension/ejection is really just symbollic.

I'm not 100% on the ruling in the MLB but I'm pretty sure there is NO contact allowed after an ejection. I think the manager sits in the clubhouse/his office for the rest of the game. I don't know how they enforce the no contact thing, but I'd think there are officials there to keep it from happeneing...especially post Bobby Valentine Groucho Marx get up.

I know according to the NFHS the manager/coach is escorted from the premise by school officials and has to stay off of school property. If it is a visiting team the coach is to remain on the bus. I'm sure, however, there is different rules for college and MLB/minors/semipro etc...

I don't know how much contact they end up having, so the suspension might not have any effect on how the game is managed. I am pretty sure that the suspended manager doesn't get paid for the game(s) that he is suspended for, so the suspension is more than just symbolic.

i know generally when it comes to a game a manager is ejected from from time to time they will send orders to the dugout from the clubhouse via a bat boy or someone else. Not sure if they are in the clubhouse when suspended though.

Watching one of the Cardinals games during which LaRussa was serving his suspension, they kept showing him up in one of those air-conditioned suites. Which isn't the clubhouse, but that doesn't mean he couldn't phone/text down to someone IN the clubhouse/dugout.

I was just reading an article in SI about Bobby Cox, it said he had a little office-type room just off the dugout he'd go into after being tossed. He'd watch the game on TV and be calling all of the shots from that room, either via a bat boy or just hollering at his bench coach.

Suspensions of managers are pointless. Dock them pay for the games but still let them manage. of if they insist on suspending them then make them stay in a suite with a MLB official the whole game with no communication out.

that's kind of what I meant with my question: was there an MLB official that kept tabs on the manager in that situation.
