So the Tigers went and put Johnny Damon on waivers... 95% of all MLB players are put on waivers in August so its no surprise.
This morning the reports were that if claimed the Tigers were likely to just let him go if no trade could be worked out.. the Tigers would save some money for a player they wouldn't likely be re-signing anyway....
So this afternoon it was reported that Damon was claimed by an unnamed team.... several AL clubs would be sure to have interest in Damon for the stretch run... most notably New York and Tampa Bay.... so of course theres a team that would want to block such a move right?
Yup. Well the Red Sox sure enough have put in a claim for Damon... and now I am sitting here.. saying NO NO NO NO NO NO
Damon's no trade clause includes the Red Sox... but if the Tigers were to let him go.... he becomes Boston's for nothing.... and surely Boston has a need for a OF.... but I dont want that traitor bastard anywhere near the Red Sox roster.

The Red Sox could end with both Damon and Manny.

I wish the Yankees would get him back.
He recently said that he wanted to come back and would have but the Yankees signed Nick Johnson before he was willing to accept a 1-year deal.

aint no way Boston would put in a waiver claim on Manny to block him from going to NYY or TB

That's not what I heard on ESPN radio last week.
The Red Sox would pick him hoping that:
- Manny does
not waive his no trade clause
- the Dodgers won't just release him
They would be hoping that by doing so, Manny would end up staying in LA. Of course, if the Dodgers do release Manny, the Red Sox would be stuck with him.

too much $$ involved to risk it.... Yes Boston is rich but they are avoiding luxury tax dollars like the plague... thats why they manipulated the rules a bit with Beltre's contract. Damon is one thing.... but too much left on Manny to risk the move.

As opposed to letting Manny fall into the arms of NY or TB.
I guess it's not like Boston will matter the rest of the year...or probably next....so it won't matter really

I think that it may ultimately come down to whether or not Boston still thinks they have a shot at the post season. They are 5 back in the WC race so they are still alive, but if they were to fall to 7 or 8 back in the next few days they might be in real trouble.

So...will Boston be making the playoffs this year?
It will be refreshing to click on new threads and not have to deal with 15 Boston threads each and every day on who, how and where a crap was taken....
Fuck you UNH.

The Red Sox dont view Manny as a threat... even if they did,,, theres only so far you go blocking players... anyone aquiring Manny right now would have to pay him almost $5 million for the rest of the season.... thats a steep price to pay for a team thats gonna find it difficult to catch TB or NY when you consider they would not actually play him..... if Boston were to claim him they would have a mysterious injury for him a day or two later and DL him for the rest of the season.... they have no interest in his cancer being back in the clubhouse for any reason.

And exactly why wont Boston matter next year? They still have 5 top of the rotation pitchers under contract for next season including two guys in the running for the CY Young this year.
They have at the moment two all star caliber closers (though Papelbon may not be back next season if they deide to trade him)
They have All Stars*** 1B and 2B along with an above average SS. They have a CF who can steal 70 bases a year and a RF who while overrated is still very good. There holes are at C, 3B and LF and a couple RP spots. Victor Martinez very well could be re-signed as could Adrian Beltre. Boston could also look to finally make the move on Adrian Gonzalez and move Youk back to 3B. And for LF they will be in a bidding war with NYY for Carl Crawford.. as well as other options for LF.
The only way Boston wont matter next year is if they suffer the same kind of injury Apocalypse as this season.... and thats not very likely to happen to a team in back to back seasons.
*** My original post was written incorrectly. I put Hall of Fame instead of All Star. MY appologies for the error...

no fuck you!
I have been nice enough to mostly confine my Red Sox stuff to one thread for you guys... but since you all keep running your fucking mouths I'll stop doing that OK.... and dont worry... I can come up with talking points for October even if the Sox arent in the playoffs.

Ugh initital reaction was Damon would reject a move to Boston.... Some are saying his veto power also works via a waiver claim, though I never heard of that before.... in any case, the speculation now is he will approve a move to Boston and many of his friends are telling him thats his best option.

Hair like Jesus...throws like Mary...loyal like Judas...
That's Johnny Damon...
The Red Sox season is done...they will not make the playoffs because of all the injuries they have suffered this year...
Next year, if healthy, they will be a factor...bank on it...

Of course Damon has veto power.

He can veto a trade, as was pointed out earlier in this thread, but he can't veto an outright release.

I was beng a bit facetious.
There's no need to veto getting cut. Anyone cut is automatically a free agent. He can negotiate with whoever is interested. And if the only one interested is someone he doesn't want to play for, oh well. He has enough cache to hang out for the rest of his life.

He should, he's made millions, but lots of athletes have made bad investments. I have no idea what Damon's portfolio looks like.
If he is cut he is not automatically a free agent, the Red Sox selected him, so his rights would belong to the Sox. He would only be a free agent if nobody selected him.
If the Tigers release him outright (unlikely I think), the Red Sox would owe him 1.8 million for the rest of the season. If he doesn't report to the Red Sox he won't get any of it. My guess would be that Damon would report and take the money.
