Amazingly stupid high school football decision

This was posted by someone I know from West Virginia on another forum.

-------------------

Our high school football season opened this week. Buckhannon-Upshur has been down for a few years....went 3-7 last season...we are hopeful for a 6-4 season this year.

We always open with one of the top local teams in the state...Bridgeport which made the state semi-finals last year with a 12-1 record.

We are up 7-0 with 90 seconds left and they bust a 33-yard touchdown run on a third and three play. Extra kick is good so its 7-7.

We take the kick-off...and the whole drive is a mess. A holding call, then an offsides, then the tailback runs into the quarterback taking a hand-off on a play.

B-U winds up with a 4th and 4 with 4.4 seconds left at their own 16. We take a time-out. We expect them to run out the clock some way. A punt out of bounds...the quarterback scrambles...throw a hail mary out of bounds.

They come out of the time out...in a tight formation and the quarterback takes a knee!!!!! ON 4th and 4!!!!!

What in the hell?

The other team kicks a 33-yard field goal at the buzzer and wins 10-7.

I have never seen anything like this in my life...

I hope to call our paper's sports editor and find out what the hell happened.

--------------------

Apparently the coach though the clock would still run. I've seen some stupid in high school football, but this might take the cake.

That sounds a little like Texas State circa 2005

That sounds a bit close to their own end zone to do anything other than punt. A line drive punt away from the safety. Barring a miracle return, the teams would be looking at OT.

While I despise coaches calling most plays, fourth down and end-of-game decisions rise to the HC level. There's absolutely NO excuse for this stuff.

A friend of mine saw the replay of this game, if the coach wasn't ogling his sister in a miniskirt up in the stands they might've called the right play.

The quotes from the coach.

"It was my fault. I really didn't think it was fourth down. I thought we still had another down thought we could take a knee "But then we yelled to run a play and the qb took a knee. I just asked him 'what did you think we said?'...And he goes "I thought you said 50...I said am yelling 32....but that's my fault."
