Troy Tulowitzki Forces Self Into MVP Race With Big September

Move over Carlos Gonzalez. Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki may have very well passed his teammate in the discussion for the NL MVP.
14 home runs and 4 multi homer games in 18 calendar days will do that. To be more specific that rampage started on September 3 so its really only been 16 calendar days and 14 games. The man is on fire, averaging a longball every game since September 3. He also has 33 RBI since the month began

Tulo is nothing short of a bad ass. Has been my favorite Rockies player since he was a rookie. His arm might be as good as his swing right now.

I'm sold. If he never went on the DL it'd be a no-brainer.

I agree, and even then I think Vuotto gets the award; but Tulowitzki has put himself into the discussion.

Yep. Tulo is arguably a top 3 SS in the majors right now, and a top 10 player.

every year he underperforms. One good month does not a top player make.

I'd say he and Hanley are neck and neck. Despite him being a whiny SOB, Hanley is a really good player.

3 *may* have been high but not by much.
Who would you put a head of him?

Hanley is the only viable argument. Stephen Drew and Alexei Ramirez are decent but not on that level, don't even try and mention Jeter because even in his prime he wasn't this good... I dunno, maybe you could mention Cliff Pennington? But none of them are near Hanley and Tulo, and I'll take Tulo any day.

I was hoping by forgetting Rollins that some Phils fan would yell at me.

Tolo might be top three NOW, but a month ago he was no better than Ramirez or Drew or Uribe or Alex Gonzalez.
As I said, one month does not a top player make. Lets see him do this for a full year. Remember, this is the same guy who hit 8 HR's and had 46 RBI just two years ago.

How is what he did two years ago relevant to how good he is now?...

Not me. This isn't 2007 when Jimmy was MVP. I'm a Rollins fan, but he is not a top 3 SS right now.

Ding ding ding.
Juan Uribe is not in the same league as Tulo. And that's knowing Tulo's stats from a couple years ago (he had a low BABIP that year and only played in 101 games).
Tulo's OPS was hovering in the .900's all season, which for a SS with good defense, is very rare. Then add in his OPS this month of 1.407 (WOW) and he's an obvious MVP candidate and separates himself as the best SS in the league, because his defense is so much better than Hanley's, and the offensive numbers pretty even.

Because Tulo's been "awesome" for exactly 3 weeks. Before that he was average at best.

If he was average, then who are the great players in the MLB?

On September 1, he had 12 HR's and 55 RBI, with a .319 average. In the 20 days since, he's gotten 14 HR's and 34 RBI. That ain't exactly Babe Ruth. Yeah, he's had an incredible month, but I'm not ready to annoint him the next great shortstop. Again, lets see him do it consistently, and not be so hot/cold.

How many days did he miss due to the DL this year?

About a month. From 6/17-7/25. 33 games.
But, he played the entire month of April. 1 HR
He played the entire month of May. 3 HR
He played 1/2 of June and some in July. 3 HR
He played all of August. 3 HR
You get my drift?

So it's all based on HR's? I guess a pitcher will never win MVP then, since they don't hit many.

No, dumbass (and I use that term as a term of endearment).

..But I was just pointing out that he's had THREE GOOD WEEKS. Let's not annoint him the 2nd coming of Cal Ripken just yet. I'm fine with giving him player of the month, but that's about as far as I'd go with ol' Tulo....

Az, you need to watch Tulo play. If you do, you'll see why he's in this conversation. The guy probably has one of the strongest arms in the majors, he doesn't make mistakes in the field, his fielding is ... awesome. He's a good hitter, especially this month. If it wasn't for Helton, he'd be the Rockies captain. He's done everything he has this year w/ two stints on the DL.
