Texas Rangers In The Money

They signed a new 20 year deal with Fox Sports Southwest that will pay the team $150 million annually. Thats the highest TV revenue for a team not owning its own network.

They paid $593 million for the Rangers part of that number was an assumed debt of $208 million. To use the money to directly pay off debt it would take one and a third seasons tv revenue. To offset the whole sale price it would be about 4 yers of the 20 year deal... Still plenty of cash left for the team. Of course this doesnt include the atleast $15 million they get from the MLB deals with FOX, ESPN and TBS. Their new tv deal alone will pay their payroll each season leaving the other revenue along with concessions, ticket sales, merchandising, advertising as a nice chunk of profits for the team.clenz wrote:Yet, they are still probably so far in debt right now, that barely makes a dent.
Well Texas does have the 5th largest media market of all the MLB teams (New York, LA, Philadelphia, Chicago) so they can expect a larger valued deal than most other teams. Most of the top market teams have their own networks and can make a lot more than what Texas is bringing in.JoltinJoe wrote:That's $3 B over the 20-year contract. The $150 million a year seems way too high.
If a regional Fox network is guaranteeing that much to the Rangers, I'd think other teams are going to want that kind of money too.
Fuck Pittsburgh. They have the Steelers.UNHWildCats wrote:Small market teams shouldn't expect to get anywhere near what Texas got. For example, Pittsburgh gets about $50 million per season or a third of what Texas is getting, Pittsburgh shouldn't expect to come anywhere near the Texas deal.

Damn, my condolences Cleveland.

You're just worried that Texas might be able to afford to resign Cliff Lee.JoltinJoe wrote:That's $3 B over the 20-year contract. The $150 million a year seems way too high.

It may be a large media market, but their local TV ratings have never been strong. That's football territory, and the only two teams which matter down there are the Dallas Cowboys and the UT Longhorns.UNHWildCats wrote:Well Texas does have the 5th largest media market of all the MLB teams (New York, LA, Philadelphia, Chicago) so they can expect a larger valued deal than most other teams. Cliff Lee is becoming a Yankee. He wants the Yankees and the Yankees want him.BlueHen86 wrote:You're just worried that Texas might be able to afford to resign Cliff Lee.JoltinJoe wrote:That's $3 B over the 20-year contract. The $150 million a year seems way too high.

Texas is like that high school kid who asked that pretty, sweet cheerleader to the dance before the quarterback of the football team did. The Rangers are that kid who just got in the way for a little while.
It won't be just a matter of the size and length of the contract. Lee is going to New York because of long-term recognition and endorsement possibilities.
Eh, I just get the impression he wants the money. Nolan Ryan is there now and considering very few people remember that he started with the Mets he can be a very good indicator that you don't need to be a Yankee to get long term recognition and endorsement possibilities. If Texas can pay him, he could very well stay put.JoltinJoe wrote:Cliff Lee is becoming a Yankee. He wants the Yankees and the Yankees want him.BlueHen86 wrote:

And it benefits Texas that he lives in Arkansas.GannonFan wrote:Eh, I just get the impression he wants the money. And Nolan Ryan wasn't near 5,000 K's when he became recognized and got endoresements. If Lee wins ballgames, as long as he's not in a tiny market like Cincy or Seattle or Pittsburgh then he'll get plenty of recognition. Heck, if he ends up being a Yankee killer he gets the best of both worlds - oodles of money to stay close to home and he uses the Yankees to build his recognition. Not everyone has the Yanks as their first choice. *cough* Mauer *cough*. Pretty sure we've heard of other players sure to become Yankees that never did *cough* Mauer *cough*.JoltinJoe wrote:Lee is 32 and nowhere near 5,000 Ks.GannonFan wrote:

I fear, for the good of baseball, Mauer is the exception. I would love to see Lee fall under that category as well though. Mauer was born and raised in the Twin Cities, grew up a Twins fan, and pretty much always wanted to be a Twin. Mauer means more to the Twin Cities, with what he has done, than he would ever be to NYC even if he lead the Yankees to 5 world series titles.GannonFan wrote:And Nolan Ryan wasn't near 5,000 K's when he became recognized and got endoresements.
