It was just a matter of time. There will be two new titles in the UFC as the Featherweight and Bantamweight champs in WEC will be recognized as the UFC Champions. That brings the UFC up to seven champions.

World Extreme Cagefighting is merging with its sister organization the Ultimate Fighting Championship

In the video interview below, Dana White exclusively confirmed that the merger will take place in January 2011. In addition, White said that four UFC events will air live on Versus in 2011.

The final two WEC cards will air on the cable network on Nov. 11 and Dec. 16, which means that starting next year, the UFC will absorb WEC's 135, 145 and 155 weight classes.

The article doesn't specify, but it seems apparent that, like the NFL-AAFC and NFL-AFL mergers, the new organization will bear the name of the more dominant UFC. Is that correct?

I'm still in shock from the Cain/Brock fight! Quite a few folks in the MMA world picked Velasquez to beat Lesnar, and I could see it happening...but not like it did!??! Brock got ABSOLUTELY DOMINATED!!

The only fighter I'm excited to watch from these lighter weight groups is José Aldo. This guy, pound for pound, is about the most exciting fighter that I've seen in a long time! He'll be a great addition to the UFC, and I don't think Faber will ever beat him!

Zuffa owned both companies. WEC has become popular with all their fighters being under 155 pounds thus more action in the fights but it was just a matter of time before this happened. One thing I heard was that the WEC fighters will automatically make five times what their base per-fight salary was in WEC.

The only division that this affects in the lightweight division as both companies had one (WEC didn't have a title for this though) so some UFC guys will cut weight down to the former WEC divisions. Previously if you were below 155, you were out of luck in the UFC so some guys bulked up just to make 70K base per fight rather than 12K in WEC.
