OK so can one of the Eagles fans that was so defending the pussifacation of the NFL two weeks ago explain to me what the flag was for? He used his shoulder, didn't "launch", what was wrong with the hit? Are defenders supposed to just let the "defenseless receiver" catch the ball? :ohno:

Don't know. Doesn't look like defenseless receiver to me. He wasn't in the air. He had already made the catch, secured the ball, took two steps... announcers were puzzled by the flag.

I didn't think he caught it did he?

I watched it again. He did actually catch it. His head didn't get hit. What was his injury? It looks like he got a full body stinger.

That was a catch (and thusly, should have been a turnover). It was a bullshit flag. It was a legal hit. And if the Eagles player gets fined/suspended for this, that's BS too.

looked like the second defender hit helmet to helmet.

The announcers (or maybe it was the halftime dudes Boomer, Cowher, Marino, Horseface, etc.) were saying that since he had already made the catch and taken a couple steps he then becomes a runner. Meaning the helmet-to-helmet rule no longer applies since he is no longer considered 'defenseless' while trying to make a catch.

Looked like a catch to me (I didn't get to watch the game). The second defender that hit him did NOT use the top of his helmet. It was facemask to helmet but only because he got hit by the first defender which changed Collie's position. IMO there is no way he gets a fine for this one.

I agree - Collie ended up being pinballed there - the first hit was absolutely clean, the guy did a great job of leading with his shoulder, and made a completely clean hit. The second tackler did make helmet to helmet contact, but at least in his case, I don't think he was aiming for that - if Collie hadn't been hit right before that I don't think the helmet to helmet contact happens. If they want to treat it like high sticking in hockey (i.e. it doesn't matter the intent, if you lose control of the stick, or helmet in this case, and you hit with it, it's still a penalty) then that's fine with me, but they didn't even call that originally. I think the refs erred on the defenseless part - the catch had been made and he made a move, but refs aren't perfect obviously.

I thought the real wussification thing happened late in the 4th when Payton fumbled when getting sacked on 4th and 18 and the refs called Cole for a blow to the head. Cole barely grazes Manning while swiping at the ball, and the refs extend the game with the call. I don't get to watch too many Colts games but I can see what AFC fans have been saying for years - guys like Manning get calls that no other QB's get.

Have you seen Ravens games? Flacco gets pummeled and nothing is called. If Peyton Manning or Tom Brady took one of the hits Flacco received yesterday, there would have been ejections from the game.

I absolutely agree with that - those guys get more protection than any I've seen, and guys like Flacco are probably just as good but don't get the calls.

At full speed it was a vicious hit. Probably got the hanky because they figured there was no way something that hard could be legal under the current rules. ;)

No seriously...the helmet and facemask aren't even close to matching.

Trent Dilfer has a ring, was he as good as Manning, too?
