Ichiro wins 10th, sure to be talk about the Yankee bias on the list.

NEW YORK -- Ichiro Suzuki won his 10th straight Gold Glove for a full season of fielding excellence. Mark Buehrle won again, perhaps clinching his spot with an acrobatic play on Opening Day.
Mixed Results
Derek Jeter won his fifth Gold Glove award, which is about four more than he really deserves, ESPN.com's Rob Neyer writes as he evaluates the AL winners. Blog
Derek Jeter, well, his selection is likely to set off another loud round of dispute over whether the award is relevant anymore.
Rawlings announced the American League honors Tuesday. Managers and coaches vote for players in their leagues and can't pick players on their own teams.
Also chosen were first baseman Mark Teixeira and second baseman Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees; third baseman Evan Longoria and outfielder Carl Crawford of the Tampa Bay Rays; Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer and Seattle outfielder Franklin Gutierrez.
The NL awards will be announced Wednesday.

Neyer can't stand that Jeter has been frequently chosen for a Gold Glove
after Neyer wrote a lengthy diatribe some years back calling Jeter poor defensively. Only a clueless stat geek or a guy who never saw Jeter play shortstop could call him a bad shortstop. Plainly Neyer is a clueless stat geek.

I'm glad Gutierrez won one this year, he was a stud in the outfield this season.

Let's all remember - Bobby "The Statue" Abreu once won the award for his *cough* defensive skills *cough* in right field. There are many cases where the Golden Glove is an absolutely bogus award.

But also many cases where it is an absolutely deserved award.
Bill Buckner comes to mind...

Rumor is that the Gold Glove Award goes to the best hitting, best looking player at each position.

No way in hell Derek Jeter is the best defensive short stop in the American League (any more).

How so?
He had the highest fielding percentage among shortstops in the league with a minimum of 30 games. .989
He had the fewest errors among shortstops in the league with a minimum of 45 games. 6
He had the third most DPs turned (in 5 less games than the 2 players above him). 94
He had the sixth most assists. 365
He had the seventh most putouts. 182
I don't see how that is a 'joke'.

Name a better one.
He has lost a step in quickness, but he positions himself in the right place for each hitter and situation. He plays a lot like Ripken did before he moved the third.
As much as I love hating on the Yankees. I can't join in on the Jeter bashing. Him good and clean. Respect where respect is due.
In closing, I hope Mussina is enjoying all his World Series rings.

He was 32 out of 36 major league shortstops in the "runs saved" category this year.
And I'm not a Jeter hater - he's a first ballot HOF'er, one of the game's best clutch hitters in history, and the main cog in winning 4 WS titles. He's an all-timer. With that said, that doesn't mean he's perfect, and he's never been a great defensive shortstop. It doesn't take away from all the other things that makes him great.
Remember, Bobby Abreu won a Gold Glove basically on the premise that if he didn't try getting to any balls, his fielding stats would be, and were, impressive. And that's the rub with the Gold Glove award.

As Andy eluded to, that can be attested to the fact that his range has reduced with age, but if he can field the ball he is still one of the most reliable. Choose your poison, I guess....a shortstop with greater range but more errors and a lower fielding percentage, or a shortstop with less range buy practically nil errors and a much higher fielding percentage.
My point though was only to argue dbj's post about Jeter. I'm not saying he is the best or perfect, only that it's not like the award was granted to a SS with 20 errors and fielding percentage 15 points lower.

btw, I love to hate on the Yankees along with 90% of the baseball loving country....but respect where respect is due. Jeter is one of the best.
MAN I can't wait until he retires! And Rivera. After those two, there ain't a single respectable person in that entire organization!

This is my "favorite" of all the extrapolated, new-fangled stats. So 31 shortstops in baseball "saved" more runs than Jeter?
Ok, prove it? When did those runs score?

Says the man who still hasn't accepted ERA as an important tool in evaluating a pitcher.
