Sandberg will manage the Lehigh Valley IronPigs of the Triple-A International League.
Sandberg, who spent most of his Hall of Fame career with the Cubs, was widely considered a favorite to succeed Lou Piniella. But the Cubs opted for Mike Quade, who managed the Cubs to a 24-13 record in the interim after Piniella abruptly retired in August.
"I didn't think it was in the Cubs' or my best interest to stay in the organization at this time," Sandberg said in a conference call. "It also would not have been fair to Mike Quade, either, if the perception was I was waiting for him to fail in Chicago and waiting for the axe to fall."
Sooooo, how long do you give Charlie til the axe falls?
