Deal involves all minor leaguers from Red Sox... some reports suggest Heath Bell could also be part of deal and Red Sox to include previously untouchable Casey Kelly.

Deal in place. Sox would send Kelly, Rizzo and Fuentes to San Diego for Gonzalez. Deal is pending a physical and contract extension being worked out.

Are these players any good? I have no problem with a trade as the Padres will have absolutely no way to afford the mega contract he is due. I also have no issue trading Bell. He should have been traded a year ago. What would the Sox give up for him?

Kelly projects as a top of the rotation guy... he was widely viewed as untouchable. Rizzo is also a top level prospect and Fuentes is a notch below. There is also a PTBNL in the deal... being rumored it will be one of the 2010 draftees who can be traded til June... possibly Kolbrin Vitek.

Also word is the Sox will be working on an extension in the neighborhood of 7 years $180 million before the deal is finalized.

Good to know about the PTBNL, I always thought Gonzo was good for at least 4 players. What positions do Rizzo and Fuentes play?

Anthony Rizzo is a 1B who has a ETA of late 2011. His comparison is Todd Helton. He is 20 years old and hit 20 HR in 102 games in 2010, he also had 30 doubles.

Raymond Fuentes is an OF with a MLB comparison of Jacoby Ellsbury. He had 42 SBs in 104 games.

Kolbrin Vitek has a 2013 ETA and compares to Michael Young, Vitek is a third baseman, but isnt confirmed to be the PTBNL.

Damn. I was hoping one of them would be a 2Bman. Either way hopefully 2 of these guys pan out.

Peter Gammons says PTBNL isn't Vitek.

so confused by this... I assume Youk is headed to 3B which would be the end of Beltre in Boston... probably good since he's only useful in contract years.
is the idea here to sell the farm to win in 2011? i assume the attitude of management is like that - but i don't know why... it's not like the yankees, with an a aging core of players - the Sox aren't young either, but this seems pretty short-sighted.
i feel bad for san diego and their fans... this would be like the Twins packaging Mauer for minor leaguers... and after the season they've had - i guess Adrian was all about the money and nothing else... sad.

Any fan with common sense knew there was no way the Padres could afford the contract Gonzo will get. It will always be like that for small market clubs. I'm just hoping the players the Padres get in return will work out.

Unless the Pads can find a way to resurrect the three-headed monster (Linebrink, Otsuka, Hoffman) of just a few years ago, dealing Bell will do absolutely no good.

Most closers have a short shelf life. I have no problem dealing him for a couple of top prospects. Plus the Padres have always seemed to have a closer in waiting.

That may be true, SD. But Hoffman was top notch in SD for what seems like 15 years. He's been horrendously misused in Milwaukee; perhaps a return to SD (with appropriate set-up men) can resurrect his career. But I don't think it would work if Bell were still around. Egos would reign.

Good. Get him as far from the NL West as possible.

This is nothing about going for it all in 2011. The deal wont be finalized until an extension is signed with Gonzalez.
Youk will go to third base. Beltre is done... and thats kinda unfortunate for him cause he lost his bargaining chip with Oakland after coming out yesterday saying his choice would be to return to Boston... now that that is no longer a choice his options are limited.
This also takes Boston out of Carl Crawford as he would make the lineup to lefthanded... Boston will now target Werth for the OF

What was up with that Toulowitzki (sp) deal? The Rockies just committed like 20% of their payroll to one guy?

Hoffman will only be back in SD when he is inducted into the Padre HOF. He was awful his last season in SD. Too many blown saves and too many hits given up. An 86 mph fastball just can't cut it.

The Sox have backed out of the trade after failing to come to a contract extension by todays 2PM deadline. The teams can continue negotiating. Boston is unlikely to include Casey Kelly in a deal that doesnt include a contract extension for Gonzalez. Its possible a new deal can be worked out replacing Kelly for other prospects.

Something happened. Gonzalez is official a Red Sox player now.
Either (a) A new trade was worked out where the Red Sox felt comfortable with what they gave up and not having an extension done. (b) The sides worked out a deal on a new contract or (c) The Sox bit the bullet and stuck with the original players without an extension for Gonzalez... stay tuned.

No confirmation yet, but the way Jon Heyman is talking about it, it appears a contract extension was worked out.

Appears a contract has been agreed upon but wont be finalized until after opening day game. The reason is if he signs the deal now the new yearly average will count towards 2011 luxury tax (probabyly $19 million or so counting in his 2011 salary) by waiting his tally against the 2011 tax will be just his 2011 salary which is just $5.5 million. The Sox thus will save about $14 to 15 million towards the luxury tax for the season.
Boston will now turn its focus to Carl Crawford who figures to be a very happy man after Werth's contract today. Crawford stands to make a fortune when he finally agrees somewhere.

new deal will be 7 years and about $161 million. The deal will take him through 2018 if its tacked onto the current deal or 2017 if it replaces his current 2011 salary. Its possible Boston will up his salary in 2011 from $5 million to the 23 million average. Boston only wanted a 6 year extension and by replacing his 2011 deal with the first year of the new deal Gonzalez gets the money but Boston isnt on the hook for the extra year.
