That Bartender tells a great story!

I wouldn't mind havin' a drink at his place!

I thought the same thing on that one. He tells a dramatic tale.

Know about Moe Norman. I think the story is grander than the man. He certainly had a gift, but he gave it a shot on tour and did not make it. They can make all the excuses they want, but his game did not hold up under pressure as the storytellers would have you believe.

Very cool story - I had never heard of him, now I'm intrigued. Good find UAH. :thumb:

You got something out of the story that I did not I guess. They gave his troubles on tour the once over as they should have. They talked about his trouble or reasons for it at the Masters. They also didn't say that he was great under pressure but just that when he was playing in Canada and in leisure games he did some pretty spectacular things.

It was pretty clear to me that when the pressure was on he struggled. That didn't take away from the rest of the story though.

Thanks man, I got a pretty good kick out of the golfer and the storyteller.

I was listening to the story thinking that this was a Sidd Finch deal. Never heard of the guy.

That bartender did spin a great telling of the story. Some smart guy would build a great sitcom around that actor playing a bartender.

No doubt. It would be kick ass and inexpensive cuz you'd only have to have a few key scenes shots during the telling of any story with the bulk of the show being one set and one actor. Bartenders always have a story to go with whatever you are talking about so the well seems plausibly deep for one guy to have hundreds of tales also. :thumb:

I was thinking something along the same lines. He starts narrating a story, and his narration gets interspersed with some footage of actors acting out some of the storyline, and then back to the narration. Every week it's a new story, with new actors.

Questions: always a sports tale? always a true story? I'd go with all different types of true stories (history, science, sports, etc.), with the writing having a humorous edge to it.

Tons & tons of unknown true stories from all over Canada & the USA that could be told. I don't think they'd all have to be done from just the sports perspective. I bet every one of us has several stories about our friends that we have thought "this would make a great fucking story for a Seinfeld episode!" or something to that effect.

Ok, Ursus, let's get working on this.

Some suggestions for our first scripts:

John Hanson, First President of the United States
Eddie Gaedel
Jean-Baptiste Lamarck

It does for me. Like I said, the stories were greater than the golfer... read: I believe a lot of it to be exaggerated.

First off, let me reiterate, he had a gift and was a great golfer, but c'mon... Claims of multiple balls being hit a copule hundred yards and coming to rest against each other, claims that he was somehow better than Tiger Woods, hitting a ball across a bridge over a creek on a drive, calling a hole in one before it goes in because he doesn't want to putt anymore.... what is this, Happy Gilmore?

I've been around golf my whole life and have met many characters. One guy used to yell "Get in the hole" on EVERY SINGLE shot he ever hit. One day, I'm sure he knocked in one from a distance ergo "called the shot".

I knew a guy who used to try to drive it over a wide concrete bridge on a creek that was 260ish carry (this was back with wooden clubs and soft balls)... he made it one out of every ten tries.

Moe Norman = unique character, great golfer, stories greater than both.

That ball over the bridge story was confirmed by Sam Snead, who was his playing partner that day.

An article from Gold Digest, in 1995, citing Snead as the source of the story (keeping in mind that Snead died in 2002), isn't confirmation of the story?? :coffee:

"Citing"?

You believe this one too?
Consider Norman's experience during a practice round before the 1971 Canadian Open. A week earlier, at the Quebec Open, he had come to the final hole with a one-stroke lead, but had four-putted the final green to finish second. (His playing partner, Gary Slatter, explained later that Norman putted poorly on the hole because he was upset that the crowd had not applauded him for being the only player that day to reach that green in two.) "Any four-putts today?" a reporter asked Norman as he came to the tee of a 233-yard par 3. Norman teed up a ball in silence and hit it straight at the pin. He watched the ball's flight a moment, then turned to the reporter and said, "Not putting today." The ball landed on the front of the green and rolled into the cup.

I believe Golf Digest is a credible source and would not spread "urban legends" as facts.

These stories were also reported in the 2005 ESPN tribute piece.

I don't disbelieve it yet. I'm waiting for the evidence against for that considering that there seems to be some validity to the other stories.

He did some incredible things apparently. I assume the incredible # of hole in ones were achieved through the normal channels of golf etiquette and so forth and that ESPN had enough faith in the sources to do some work on it.

I'm willing to go along with it because there are probably a lot of verifiable things that are on the level of that one.
