Judge Orders End To Lockout

Post by UNHWildCats »

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (AP)—A federal judge ordered an end to the NFL lockout on Monday, giving the players an early victory in their fight with the owners over how to divide the $9 billion business.

U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson said she was swayed by the players’ argument that that the lockout, now in its second month, was causing irreparable harm to their careers.

The plaintiffs “have made a strong showing that allowing the League to continue their ‘lockout’ is presently inflicting, and will continue to inflict, irreparable harm upon them, particularly when weighed against the lack of any real injury that would be imposed on the NFL by issuing the preliminary injunction,” Nelson wrote.

The NFL promised an immediate appeal.

“We will promptly seek a stay from Judge Nelson pending an expedited appeal to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals,” the league said. “We believe that federal law bars injunctions in labor disputes. We are confident that the Eighth Circuit will agree. But we also believe that this dispute will inevitably end with a collective bargaining agreement, which would be in the best interests of players, clubs and fans. We can reach a fair agreement only if we continue negotiations toward that goal.”

Owners imposed the lockout after talks broke down March 11 and the players disbanded their union. A group of players filed the injunction request along with a class-action antitrust lawsuit against the league.

Just saw that. About time. So I take it this means teams can trade players, per the rules of the prior CBA? I wonder how many will get done before Thursday. This is going to be entertaining.

the owners are appealing so I dont know if the court they file the appeal with will order a stay until they hear the appeal.

Damn. I was hoping there wouldn't be an NFL season next year. Sounds like it is almost certain there will be a season. :x

Blah blah blah blah - this is all just about one group of millionaires fighting with another group of millionaires. As long as it is all solved by the time my Fantasy Football draft comes around at the end of August, then I'm good. :thumb:

You know, I have bashed hockey since they had a lockout years ago and I never really cared to watch it. But this past weekend while recovering from a massive hangover, I caught the Flyers-Sabers game 6 and I must say, very exciting. I might watch another hockey game this month.

I guess bash was the wrong word. I guess I meant to say it was pretty damn irrelevant for a while.

No doubt about that. The advent of HD, and lack of opportunities for commercials, have turned it into a great TV sport (at least from a fan's point of view).

Not counting the 2 mandatory 17 minute intermissions between each period, and the mandatory TV timeouts at 6, 10 & 14 minutes of each period.....of course...

Commercials in football games are great. Perfect time to get another beer or more wings. Or put some of said beer in the toilet.

i agree with his sentiment - my hope would be that it would draw more people to the college game (which i greatly prefer)

i really don't get the love for the NFL... it makes no sense.

Much fewer teams to have to follow...
Larger fanbases per team...
Leads to bigger rivalries....
A lot of the same players every year for a decade or two to follow....
Fantasy football......
Gambling....
Easy to remember and consistent starting times....
Not a lot of patsy, cupcake, schedule-filling game...
Every team has a legit shot to win the title...
There actually is a legitimate title (i.e. no polls)....
Madden is almost always better than NCAA Football...
NFL Films...

Hey, I love college football, but it isn't hard to see why the NFL is very, very successful.
