Crime will rise if NFL season is cancelled....

...so sayeth the oracle Ray Lewis, and he should know.
Ray Lewis cites another concern if football is lost for any significant time: idle hands. One of the consequences of a lost NFL season will be an increase in crime, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis said in a wide-raging one-on-one interview with ESPN. "Do this research if we don't have a season -- watch how much evil, which we call crime, watch how much crime picks up, if you take away our game," Lewis told ESPN. ... "Yeah, walk in the streets, the way I walk the streets, and I'm not talking about the people you see all the time." When asked why he thought crime would increase if the NFL doesn't play games this year, Lewis said: "There's nothing else to do."

Perhaps the most narcissistic comments I've seen come out of the whole lockout. Really Ray? You guys are keeping crime low?
You live in Baltimore, bruh. Ever watch the evening news during the season? Murder, murder, murder, weather, sports.
Puh-lease.

While I don't think football is keeping the number of murders down, it's not that far fetched that people will be looking for things to do with their time if there's no NFL season. Maybe it will lead to more people going to church on Sundays. Maybe more family time. Maybe more mischief. There are a lot of people out there who's free time revolves around the NFL.

Sunday and Monday DWI's might drop. Maybe the leaves get raked earlier or more often. Maybe Ray will take his crime game out of state again. Savings rates could rise from not attending games with $75 seats and $10 beers.
I'm more worried about unleashing 500 bored, oversized, roided millionaires on the general population.

Remember, though - while we all love sports and spend a great deal of our time watching sports, the greater majority of the population doesn't watch the NFL (or any sports). A good NFL game gets what, 20 million viewers? What do the other 290 million Americans doing then? Even if 50 or 60 million Americans are watching or attending NFL games every weekend, that's still another 250 or so million Americans that aren't.
I did think it was kinda funny from what Ray Lewis said - he may have really been referring to the NFL players who wouldn't have anything to do without football and could get into mischief. Some of them already have trouble in just the offseason in terms of staying out of trouble.

of all the consequences of no NFL - i'd wager strongly on two:
1. A decrease in the number of people driving drunk on Sundays
2. A marked decrease in domestic violence calls to the police on Sundays (NFL Sundays are currently much higher days for these calls, esp. when the local team loses... sadly, I'm serious)

If those NFL players are not practicing during the week and playing on the weekends those NFL players will be out murdering/raping/pillaging(sp)/robbing banks/poaching/fishing without a license/parking illegally/J-walking/
The crime rates will be going up 10,000 percent.

This may sound simple, but... something else. They don't care about the NFL now, so they won't care if the NFL goes away. For the 20 million, it will be a void.

I can only take that statement (crime will rise) to mean some of the players will get bored and........
Other than that, at least were I'm at, it would even be lower. Less DUIs, Bar fights and what not from watching the games....
