The undefeated California Quake (9-0) proved their top ranking with a 22-19 win over the Sacramento Sirens (5-4) in the first round of the IWFL playoffs tonight. The Quake will face the also 9-0 Wisconsin Warriors, who defeated the Portland Shockwave (6-3) 13-12 in the other Western Conference Division Round game. This is a big improvement for the Sirens, who did not do well in the second half of two previous games vs. the Quake this year, but it wasn't enough.

In Eastern Conference playoff action:

Atlanta Xplosion/Ravens (9-0) d. Houston Energy (6-3) 14-13
Carolina Phoenix (8-0) d. Montreal Blitz (8-1) 12-7.

In Tier II (i.e. second place teams) action:

Seattle Majestics (5-4) d. Madison Cougars (5-4) by forfeit
Chattanooga Locomotion (7-2) d. North Texas Knockouts (5-4) 24-20
Modesto Maniax (5-4) d. Tucson Monsoon (3-6) 42-8
New England Intensity (6-3) d. Baltimore Nighthawks (4-4-1) 25-0

Bold scores added 26 JUN.

I'm not sure what's going on over there. They've been the Xplosion for several years now, and have won titles under that name. Now all of a sudden this year, there's reference to a new name (the Ravens), but the league often still calls them the Xplosion (yes, without the "e"). I'm using both just to be safe.

I guess Madison couldn't come up with the cache to get to Seattle. The teams are run on such a shoestring budget that they have to do extra fundraising for road playoff games.

Any truth the rumor that some of these dudes will be replacement players if the lock out is not settled?

They're not dudes. Have you bothered to look at the skill-position players?

That said, I haven't heard ANYTHING about scab games this year.
