The greatest player of his generation just smacked his fifth hit in five tries today, and drove in the go ahead run in the bottom of the 8th.

Chipper Jones is not the best but deserves to be on the list.

Jeter
Chipper
Pujols
Griffey
ARod
Bonds*

Bonds is absolutely the best player on that list, if you disregard the obvious steroid use.

I think Jeter is this generations Pete Rose. They are both great competitors who make plays that most other players wouldn't make.

However,

I don't think Rose was the greatest player of his generation and I don't think Jeter is the greatest player fo this generation. For one, I would rank Pujols ahead of Jeter.

No Ichiro.
How many other players had over 200 hits in each of their first 10 season in the Majors, or even 10 consecutive years of 200 hits. Ichiro already has over 3000 hits if you combine his Japanese stats.

I would also add Frank Thomas to the list of greats of this generation.

He's not even the best SS. A-Rod was and probably still is a better SS

It's hard to say Arod is better than Jeter because Arod has the steroids taint on his career -- although it seems at this time that the public has given him a pass.

It's funny how some guys with steroid taint (Palmiero, McGwire, Ramirez) have essentially had every thing they accomplished thrown out the door; while other guys with a steroid taint (Arod, David Oritz) have been given a pass.

Of course, Arod and Ortiz 'fessed up without incident with reports surfaced about their use. So if you come clean, you get the pass perhaps.

Look at Andy Pettitte/Roger Clemens. I recently read an article saying Pettitte should get a close look by the Hall voters. But Clemens may never get in, the way things stand.

I think fans know even without solid evidence that most players in the past 15 to 20 years atleast have cheated and are willing to forgive those who as you put it 'fessed up'.

Or is it that many fans recognize that that Arod and Ortiz have never failed a drug test other than that "confidential" test, the results of which were never supposed to be made public, and think it's unfair that their names were selectively leaked to the media?

The best argument so far in this thread is for the Tomahawk Trio.

That said, my vote goes to the Bulldog.

Are we talking "Greatest Baseball Player of this Generation" or "Best Singles Hitter of this Generation"?

If it's the former, Jeter's not even in the top 10, if it's the latter, I'm still not sure he beats out Ichiro or Tony Gwynn.

when reading threads by Joe, you gotta wear the Yankee glasses to see it, much like you need to wear Red Sox glasses for my threads. :thumb:

Define "this generation" before some posters start throwing out guys from the 60's...we already have 80's players in the mix.

If you don't think Jeter is one of the ten 10 best of this generation, you have no idea about baseball. I think the names being tossed around here (as hitters) are on the money: Griffey, Jones, Jeter, Ichiro, Pujols. And all kidding aside, Griffey is probably No. 1 and, if Pujols stay clean, he's No. 2 (I've always had a bad feeling about him). Then Jeter, Jones, Ichiro, Frank Thomas.

A player that often gets overlooked is Miguel Cabrera who is half way to 3000 hits and 500 home runs at age 28. He is often on the leader board in Avg, HR and RBI's, and already has a ring with Florida, his rookie season. He has a different drug problem, if he doesn't drink himself out of the game, he should have some great numbers in the end.
