...A-Rod.
Apparently, he's allegedly involved in some sort of high-stakes gambling. He might end up suspended.

people got banned for betting on poker?
I can see the ban for betting on MLB baseball games, but I don't understand why betting on a poker game should result in a ban.

If anyone watched the HBO special on Jeter last week I'm sure you noticed the huge poker table in his living room.
Playing cards for money is the pastime of America's Pastime.

whole thing is stupid - so what, A-Rod, or anyone else playing poker for money. And for him, the "high-stakes" are like penny-ante to me...

MLB issued lifetime bans to Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays for merely associating with gamblers. (They had accepted jobs as casino greeters.) The bans were rescinded five years later. If MLB will ban players for something as innocuous as this, it's not too much of a stretch to see them banning A-Rod for actually gambling, as has already happened with several players going all the way back to the 1800s, including the immortal Pete Rose.

Exactly...
Regarding A-Rod and the current situation...he was warned by MLB for past involvement in similar gambling...he was told to stay away from it...
If he gets suspended, its going to be more for ignoring the Commish than for atual gambling...IMHO...

Arod was playing poker with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, two huge Red Sox fans?
No wonder things got violent.

His ban is listed as gambling, PERIOD. Sure, there's that extra factor. But as noted, others have been banned for gambling, which could include almost anything. And if the organization will ban Mantle and Mays for merely standing at the door saying hi to people (the "associating with gamblers" bit), how can they NOT ban A-Rod without losing all cred?

Good point. The commish is an idiot and has been a walking conflict of interest from the day he took the bloody job.

Rose was banned for the basrball aspect of gambling, not gambling itself. If the MLB banned every player that gambled on an occasional poker game there'd be no one left to play the game

Isn't getting involved in high stakes gambling the real reason why Michael Jordan took up baseball for a couple years?
