Rogers replaces Rangers midfielder Maurice Edu, who was injured in a friendly against EPL side Chelsea on Saturday in Glasgow. Rangers lost 3-1.

Break On Through
Americans get it right, give Klinsmann first win as head coach

Image

MIAMI – A craftsman’s goal from Clint Dempsey and stellar goalkeeper from Tim Howard gave Jurgen Klinsmann his first win as US coach Saturday night with a 1-0 victory over Honduras before 21,170 fans at Sun Life Stadium.

After starting his tenure with two losses and a tie, Klinsmann finally got a winning result to go along with the refreshing optimism he has brought to the US program. Dempsey scored in the 36th minute, calmly curling a left-footed shot into the upper 90 after a corralling a Brek Shea cross. Howard made the goal stand with two world-class saves, one to keep it scoreless early and another in the second half that preserved the result.

US to square off against France in Paris in November
Klinsmann takes team back to Europe for Nov. 11 friendly

Image

The US Soccer Federation announced on Friday that the US men's national team will play an international friendly against France on Nov 11. The match is scheduled to take place at the Stade de France in Paris and will be broadcast live on ESPN2, ESPN3 and Univisión and Unvision.com at 3 pm ET.

"France is traditionally one of the best teams in the world," US head coach Jurgen Klinsmann said in a press release. "When you look at their history, the players that have come through their team and what they have accomplished, you have to be impressed. This is an awesome opportunity for our players to play in a stadium that has hosted a World Cup final, and a great experience for their careers."

Finishing Well
Buddle, Dempsey, Altidore score as US defeat Slovenia in 2011 finale

Image

Revenge of a sort gave the US national team a win in their final match of 2011.

Edson Buddle, Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore each scored in the first half as the United States defeated Slovenia, 3-2, on a foggy night at Stožice Stadium in Ljubljana on Tuesday. The two teams tied 2-2 under controversial circumstances during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where the US were denied a seemingly good late winner.
Image
The Americans' trio of goals on this night were one more than their previous total in six games under the guidance of Jurgen Klinsmann. The win marked Klinsmann’s second victory in charge, taking his record as US manager to 2-4-1 in the final international match scheduled for 2011.

US confirms January friendlies vs. Venezuela, Panama
Klinsmann & Co. to host Venezuela, travel to Panama in January

Image

US Soccer on Thursday confirmed the long-rumored USMNT matches scheduled for January 2012. The first match features Venezuela on January 21 in Glendale, Ariz., followed by a road match against Panama in Panama City four days later.

The two games will wrap up Jurgen Klinsmann’s first January camp at the helm of the US national team. The traditional two-week training camp gathers many MLS-based players since the matches coincide with the MLS offseason and do not fall on FIFA fixture dates.

US to take on Italy in February 29 friendly in Genoa
Leap Day match to benefit flood victims, details still being finalized

Image

AMSTERDAM — The US national team will be making a quick return to Europe for a great cause when they visit Italy in Genoa on Feb. 29, MLSsoccer.com has learned.

Multiple sources in Italy confirmed that the Nats will clash with the Azzurri to benefit victims of November's deadly flooding in Genoa just three months and change after winning at Slovenia. Details of the charity action are not yet known, but one source indicated that US coach Jurgen Klinsmann accepted a specific invitation for his team to take part in the event.

It seems US head coach Jurgen Klinsmann will get his second taste of the heated rivalry against Mexico in an exhibition match to be played this August. The venue? Estadio Azteca. Can Klinsmann finally lead the Americans through the humid, smoggy, and raucous atmosphere to their first-ever victory south of the border? (Goal.com - Jan. 14, 2012)
According to their federation's own calendar, the Brazilian national team will play both the United States and Mexico during their summer swing. The four-time World Champs are slated to play Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on June 9. According to this link, they'll face the USMNT a week earlier in either Washington or Boston, and El Tri in Dallas. (cbf.com.br - Jan. 12, 2012)

Recap:
Clark's late header gives US 1-0 win over Venezuela
Substitute makes no mistake in stoppage time for dramatic win

Image

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Time after time, chance after chance, the US national team pushed hard for a possible winning goal against Venezuela, only to be turned away.

Then, a foul put more time on the stoppage-time clock in the second half, and the US took advantage. Jermaine Jones’ corner kick found Ricardo Clark’s head, and Clark beat Venezuela goalkeeper Jose Morales in the eighth minute of extra time.

The final whistle sounded just seconds later, and the US celebrated a 1-0 victory before 22,403 at University of Phoenix Stadium.

US to face rivals Canada in Toronto friendly on June 3
Image

The match, which will be televised live in the US on NBC Sports Network at 7 pm ET, will also serve as the final tune-up for both squads ahead of the third round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.

“First of all, we are honored to be chosen to be part of Canada's Centenary celebration,” US head coach Jurgen Klinsmann said in a statement. “This is exactly the type of challenge we are looking for as we grow the team and get ready for the start of World Cup qualifying. There is a great history in the rivalry, and Canada is a team we could see in the final round of qualifying. It's a win-win for everybody.”

Stone-Cold Stunner
Dempsey scores as US notch a huge upset win over Italy

Image

The US national team produced their first-ever win against Italy thanks to Clint Dempsey’s second-half strike in a 1-0 win at Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa on Wednesday.

The pivotal moment came in the 55th minute when Fabian Johnson whipped in a teasing ball that Jozy Altidore laid off superbly for the on-rushing Dempsey, who drilled his shot hard and low past the despairing dive of Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

The win marks the first time the US have defeated Italy in 11 attempts since the nations first met 82 years ago. It also marks the first time Italy have lost in Genoa since 1924.

Here? Just a friendly
In Italy? A fiasco

Image

Here in the US we're fed a steady diet of "don't get too worked up about friendly wins." And it's sound advice that goes all the way back to the 3-6-1 thrashing of Austria in the lead-up to the 1998 World Cup.

In Italy, though, they are a bit more... passionate. Or uncompromising. Or irrational.

However you want to put it, the Italian press is, in the wake of the US' 1-0 win over the Azzuri on Wednesday, showing the fight and engagement that both the players and fans in Genoa clearly lacked (the crowd, I think we can all agree, was terrible).

La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian soccer bible, called the US win "A fiasco." And it gets more colorful from there.

In Jurgen we trust!

As talented as the last 2 WC teams have been, we have a butt load of talent on the U20 and U23 teams coming up through the ranks. We'll always miss Donovon and Demps and the likes but I'm exited to start seeing the young guys earn their places

US Olympic team dictates match against Mexican U-23s
Image

In matches against Mexico, the United States are usually on the short side of possession and attacking opportunities.

But Wednesday night at FC Dallas Stadium, head coach Caleb Porter’s side were the ones dictating possession and tempo en route to a 2-0 win in preparation for Olympic qualifying.

“Going into the game, we approached it like we were going to try to get control of the game,” Porter told reporters after the match. “There are different ways to approach the match. We could have approached it in a negative way, sit back, defend, counter, but that’s not the way we wanted to do things.

“We’ve been training to control the game with possession and obviously when we lose the ball to press at the right moments.”
