What a joke. How the Pads expected something like that to get past the Giants (with closer Brian "Fear the Beard" Wilson on IR along with set-up man Sergio Romo) is beyond me.
And if the Giants actually expect the Padres not to withdraw waivers with an intra-division claim on the books is ALSO beyond me.
Seems like a game of one-upsmanship to me.

Pads Try to Sneak Heath Bell Through Waivers

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

The Padres want to get something for Bell, The Giants are already all in with acquiring Beltran and need a reliable reliever... seems like the best match up for a waiver trade, division rival or not.

Thome and Kubel both claimed, but the team(s) have not been announced. Rumor is Chicago WS for Thome.
