I was originally going to name this thread "Yankees Magic Number" but didn't want to look too far ahead so I'll just post that RIGHT now, IF the Yankees hold onto the AL East it currently stands at 19

This race will go down to the final weekend of the season... if the loser wasn't solidly locked into the WC it would be a race good for baseball in a year when there are no real races... but as such with the wild card era, the AL East race is never as exciting as it was in the past.
Boston has the slight advantage schedule wise including 7 games against Baltimore.

Since it may well turn out that the AL East winner gets to face Justin Verlander two times in five games, the wild card may turn out to be the better option. Right now, Detroit is only 1/2 game ahead of the AL West Leader, Texas. And with a nine game lead in its division, Detroit will certainly be able to set it up so Verlander is ready to go in Game 1.
Imagine if your "reward" for winning the East and having the AL's best record is you get to see Verlander two times in a best of five?

Not if you sweep them... or get swept.

Texas ain't a walk in the park either for the Sox or the Yanks. The AL's going to end up being a lot more competitive than the NL is shaping up to be. Wouldn't shock anyone if Detroit and Texas are playing each other in the ALCS. Certainly not the likely scenario, but it's easy to see that it could happen.

I would not be concerned in the very least if the Yanks have to face Verlander in the ALDS. Who do they have after Verlander but you could make the same argument with the Yanks however...
I'm confident CC can beat Verlander at home in game 1 of the ALDS. Yanks have had success against Verlander in the past and he will have to lose at some point.
I also agree with UNH, this division race will come down to the last weekend of the season. I don't think anybody thought the Yanks would be up 2.5 games on the Sox this late in the season...I certainly didn't and I'm the biggest Yankee fan on this board outside of maybe joltinjoe.

Red Sox and Yanks both lose once again so I assume the magic number remains at 19.

No. It drops to 18 because of the Boston loss.

No he doesn't. He might lose, but pitchers have put together undefeated post season runs before, no reason that Verlander can't do the same.

FWIW - the magic number for the Yankees to clinch a playoff spot is 12.

Even though I'm a huge Verlander fan, I can't see him winning his last 13 starts in the regular season and then go unbeaten in the playoffs. If so, I will be very VERY impressed and he would and should win the MVP award.

Texas is no easy out, but at least in my opinion, it is an easier out than Detroit.

First time since the last 4 days of April 1986 that both teams have lost on the same four consecutive days.

Can the red sox keep losing so the Yanks can wrap up the AL East ASAP?! Magic number down to 13.
FWIW, whoever comes out of the American League will just get the privelege of losing to the Phillies in the World Series.
