What? 6 aging veterans with slow bats in the lineup at once wasn't enough?

The guy just came off a .309 season, 29 HRs, 96 RBI, OBP of .398, and has a swing which is perfect for the right-field porch at Yankee Stadium. Yes, I'll take him as the DH. He'll hit 40 HRs next year as a Yankee.AZGrizFan wrote:![]()

Oh, he's an upgrade over Posada there's no doubt....but when will the Yankees learn than collecting overpaid, underperforming over the hill veterans just isn't a recipe for success? The Rangers (ye of the $91 million in salary) are about to make their SECOND STRAIGHT trip to the World Series from the American League while the Yankmees ($196 million) and Red Sox ($160 million), who fight over the above described uberveterans every year in the off season, sit home AGAIN.JoltinJoe wrote:The guy just came off a .309 season, 29 HRs, 96 RBI, OBP of .398, and has a swing which is perfect for the right-field porch at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees had the best record in the AL and lost a playoff series that could have gone either way. The MLB baseball playoffs are a tournament any more. You get in, you basically have a 1-in-8 chance to win it all.AZGrizFan wrote:Oh, he's an upgrade over Posada there's no doubt....but when will the Yankees learn than collecting overpaid, underperforming over the hill veterans just isn't a recipe for success? You shouldn't mock the Yankees' business model. They play in front of the largest crowds in baseball. They make money hand over fist and put money in the pocket of other teams as well. They've made the MLB playoffs in 16 of the last 17 years and have won five world series during that period (or once for every 3.4 post-season appearances, far better than than the expected 1-in-8).

Honestly, Joe...given the inherent advantages they have, if I were a fan of the Yankees I'd be pissed as HELL. They have underperformed horribly over the past 10 years.
In fact, about the only reason there's not a line of people looking for Cashman's head is because he's got the Mets in town to thankfully deflect attention from the failures of the Yankee organization.

I'll tell you: 9 playoff appearances, 1WS. They've become the Atlanta Braves of the American League, only they spend obscene amounts of money to do it...more than any other team and more than most teams COMBINED in a given year, and they play in the largest market in the world (hence the largest crowds)...

Guess what? My team won EXACTLY THE SAME NUMBER of playoff games the Yankees did this year...at 1/4 the price.JoltinJoe wrote:AZGrizFan wrote:

Re: David Ortiz to the Yankees?
Hey, Griz, look, you can put together a quality team but things can still happen on the field.
The subject here is whether to sign David Ortiz.
There are 30 MLB teams. It's hard, even for the Yankees, to get to and win the World Series, no matter who is on the roster. There are no sure things in this regard.
But signing David Ortiz is sure thing to make Sox fans go apoplectic.
So let's go for the sure thing.

Your team is over the hill. Signing more over the hill players at over-inflated prices won't help.JoltinJoe wrote:Hey, Griz, look, you can put together a quality team but things can still happen on the field.

As a Twins fan...I'd take him back. We took a chance on Thome and he was a great addition....Papi could be good as well.

It would be a nice way for him to wind down his career to return back where it started. I'm not sure the Sox are going to try re-signing him, if they don't I would love to see him return to the Twins.clenz wrote:As a Twins fan...I'd take him back. The Twins need a lot more help than Big Papi...clenz wrote:As a Twins fan...I'd take him back. We took a chance on Thome and he was a great addition....Papi could be good as well.
Pitching has to be #1 priority for them. The offense would've been fine if we didn't play our ENTIRE AAA roster for the second half of the season.
I pray to god he doesn't go to the Yankees because I'm a huge Papi fan, and would really hate to cheer against him.

I'm sorry JJ but I absolutely DO NOT want to see David Ortiz in a yankee uniform. In his prime? ABSOLUTELY but on the decline of his career?!

Not that I want to defend the Yankees or anything, but weirder things have happened. There was once a quarterback who washed out of New England and San Francisco who went on to win TWO Super Bowls after the so-called "experts" said he was washed up. The same thing might happen to Ortiz.ODUalum11 wrote:I'm sorry JJ but I absolutely DO NOT want to see David Ortiz in a yankee uniform. In his prime? ABSOLUTELY but on the decline of his career?!
That said, if Ortiz DOES have a renaissance, I hope it's for ANYBODY other than NYY or NYM.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

I'd rather see the Yanks spend the time and energy trying to get someone like Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder, not someone on the decline of his career....gotta remember the Yanks are already old to begin with.SuperHornet wrote:Not that I want to defend the Yankees or anything, but weirder things have happened. Their main focus should be the starting rotation. I think the prized free agent the yanks should go out and sign this year is CJ Wilson.

If the Yanks already didn't have a pretty good first basemen, YES. I realize it's not likely the Yanks will sign either of them I was just trying to make a point of me personally not wanting to see the Yanks sign Ortiz.AZGrizFan wrote:You think Texiera wants to sit? The main focus as it was last offseason for the yankees needs to be starting pitching...and possibly a new manager.
Yanks top two priorities need to be....
1. Sign CC to a contract extension, or else he will probably walk away from the Yanks and sign with Texas.
2. Sign CJ Wilson
Position by Position breakdown...
1st base...all set with Tex.
2nd base...I believe Cano is a FA but I think the Yanks will do everything in their power to resign him.
Shortstop...Jeter just signed a contract extension last offseason.
3rd base....A-Rod
Catcher...Posada is a FA, Yanks might let him walk which will disappoint me but I think they are all set with Jesus Montero and Russell Martin...depending on if the Yanks resign Martin...if not then Montero could become the everyday catcher with Cervelli backing him up.
DH...could be a by committee type situation.
LF...Gardner
CF...Granderson
RF...Swisher
So in the end, priorities #3 and #4 might be trying to find an everyday DH and filling the bench.
I think a rotation of CC Sabathia, CJ Wilson, Ivan Nova, Phil Hughes, AJ Burnett could be very solid.
