Apparently previous reports that Theo Epstein would become Cubs President of Baseball Operations and General Manager are inaccurate.

Epstein will apparently become just President of Baseball Operations and he will work out a deal to get Padres GM Jed Hoyer who he worked with in Boston as the Cubs next GM.

Hoyer is locked up with the Padres through 2013 and the Cubs maybe unwilling to give up a significant piece to Boston to either have a better package to get Hoyer with or to limit a comparative package to the Padres for Hoyer.

Both Boston and san Diego have GM's in waiting with Ben Cherington in Boston and Josh Byrnes in San Diego.

Cherington has been a longtime Red Sox employee who once hired Hoyer as an intern with the Sox front office in a competition that came down to Hoyer and Rangers GM Jon Daniels. After selecting Hoyer for the internship, Cherington contacted a friend with the Rockies and got Daniels a gig there. Daniels now is the GM of two-time defending American League Champion Texas Rangers.

I would speculate that the Cubs are smart not giving up people that actually play for a guy that doesn't.
