The United States U-23 men's national soccer team, also known as the United States Men's Olympic Soccer Team, is a youth soccer team operated under the auspices of U.S. Soccer. Its primary role is qualification into and competition at the quadriennial Olympic Football Tournament, the next of which is to be held during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England. The team's most recent major tournament was the tournament at the 2008 Summer Olympics, in which the United States team was eliminated in the first round group stage.

The roster can be augmented with three "overage" players, ostensibly possessing veteran experience, during Olympic competition, in accordance with FIFA regulations.

Sporting Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi opened the scoring for the USMNT in the first half, but Philadelphia Union forward Jack McInerney equalized for the U-23s in the second half.

Adu takes on next chapter as U-23 leader
Adu's journey has new twist as he aims for Olympic redemption

Image

CARSON, Calif. – It’s been an enormously productive week in January camp for US Soccer, as both the senior and Under-23 national teams have trained for more than a week literally side by side on adjacent practice fields at the Home Depot Center.

The interplay has been frequent, both in twin scrimmages between the squads – in which some players, like Teal Bunbury and Bill Hamid, played for both sides – and in the trickle-down of philosophy from Jurgen Klinsmann to Caleb Porter.

But there’s one thing that’s still a little mind-blowing: watching Freddy Adu quarterback the U-23s and realizing that, at age 22, he has more senior US caps than all but four players on the 20-man senior squad.

US U-23s play to scoreless draw with Saprissa reserves
Caleb Porter plays 11 MLS products in first of two scrimmages in Costa Rica

In the first of two scrimmages to conclude their own January camp, the US U-23 national team played to a scoreless draw on Saturday in Costa Rica against Saprissa’s reserve squad.

The game was played at Estadio Ricardo Saprissa, which has been the site of a number of clashes with MLS sides in recent seasons, including RSL’s 2-1 loss against the Purple Dragons that still sent them to the CONCACAF Champions League final on aggregate.

MLS products dominated Caleb Porter’s lineup, as 11 of the 18 players who appeared for the US represented a domestic sides. The U-23s will conclude their January gathering with another scrimmage against Alajuelense.

US U-23s close January camp with win at Alajuelense
Image
Taylor's goal gives Olympic hopefuls a 1-0 victory in Costa Rica

The United States U-23 national team closed out the second leg of training camp ahead of Olympic qualifying on a high note, defeating an Alajuelense concoction of first-teamers and reserves 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon in Alajuela, Costa Rica.

Forward Tony Taylor was lone goal scorer, finding the net in the 39th minute after a good build-up from the young Americans.

“We pressured them and did everything we could to win,” Taylor told the Costa Rican club’s website after the match. “[Alajuelense] are a good team, they showed great touch.”

The victory was the first for the US U-23s throughout their January camp, which featured a 4-0 loss and a 1-1 tie in scrimmages against the US men’s national team, and a scoreless tie against the Saprissa reserves on Saturday.

The US U-23s begin CONCACAF Olympic qualifying play on March 22 against Cuba in Nashville, Tenn. They will then face Canada on March 24 and close out Group A competition against El Salvador on March 26.

The Americans must reach the final of the qualifying tournament – which includes Mexico, Honduras, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago in Group B – to participate in the Olympics.

the olympic games always make me sad for my people for the captive nation that we are. seeing all the lesser peoples of this planet who have their own nation and ours being occupied by our enemy and not taking our rightful place with the other nations at the opening ceremony and marching in with our own team under our flag. the medal ceremony not playing this song makes me sad.

Olympic Qualifying:
USA, Mexico favored for London berths

Image

The Stakes
The two finalists of this tournament will receive the two allotted CONCACAF berths at the 2012 Olympics. The winner of the final will also win the U-23 CONCACAF Championship.

The Players
Each qualifying nation sends a U-23 team to the CONCACAF tournament. Per FIFA rules, players must be born on or after Jan. 1, 1989.

The same rules apply for the actual Olympic Games; however, each team may include three players over the FIFA-mandated age-limit when the London games roll around.

The Teams
The United States, Mexico and Canada all qualified automatically to the final CONCACAF round. The other five nations — Honduras, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, El Salvador and Cuba — qualified for the tournament through a group-play elimination process that began in August 2011.

The Favorites
As is usually the case, the USA and Mexico are favorites to qualify. The US roster chosen by coach Caleb Porter boasts 14 players from MLS, including Philadelphia’s Freddy Adu, Dallas’ Brek Shea and Sporting KC’s Teal Bunbury.

There are also six players from abroad, including Gent’s Mikkel Diskerud and Tijuana’s Joe Corona. Having decided to play the same attacking 4-3-3 formation used by Jurgen Klinsmann at the senior level, the U-23s come into the tourney on a high note, after beating the NASL's Atlanta Silverbacks in a scrimmage on Sunday and topping Mexico, 2-0, in a friendly in Dallas late last month.

For the sake of taking any air time away from the real stories of the London Olympics - like how many golds can Michael Phelps win this time and will any Borat parodies make it as national anthems of former Soviet Bloc countries you can kill this thread.

Besides isn't this a sports thread section....

CONCACAF OLYMPIC QUALIFIERS

Olympic Qualifying:
Mexico, Honduras into semifinals

Image

Honduras got the night started with a professional 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago. They opened the scoring in the 36th minute with a header from forward Eddie Hernandez, and got the capper in the 69th courtesy of fellow front-runner Anthony Lozano.

In the nightcap the already-qualified Mexicans trotted out a predominantly reserve squad and spent much of the game being bossed by a feisty Panamanian side before eventually winning 1-0. Midfield ace Marco Fabian was subbed on for the final 29 minutes, and was on the field to see Erick Torres knock home the winner in second half stoppage time.
