Sirens Resume Winning Ways...

Post by SuperHornet »

...but it was anything but pretty.

In one of the sloppiest exhibitions of football I've ever seen, the Sacramento Sirens returned to the W column with a 31-6 win over the severely shorthanded Modesto Maniax at Paul Shimada Stadium at Natomas High School in Sacramento tonight. I lost track of the number of interceptions that went each way. Trewdy Wolfe took one to the end zone for a pick six and saved one that would have resulted in the first defensive two-point conversion I've ever seen live. The kicking game was atrocious for both teams (a Sirens punt was blocked and a Sirens chip shot field goal attempt fell WAY short). The game shifted on a relatively few number of big plays, including a 46 yard run up the middle by World Championship gold medalist Julie Shockley. The highlight, however, had to be the opening kickoff, when Sirens DL Christy Medinger completely lit up the returner. It was a hit worthy of "[S]he got jacked up!" (Remember that?)

The game was unfortunately called with 11:21 left in the fourth quarter after the Maniax sustained more injuries than they had subs. (They only came with about six or eight.) The Sirens improve to 3-1 while the Maniax fall to 2-3.

Next week, Sacramento heads up I-5 to Portland to face the Shockwave in a rematch of the Sirens previous win. The 0-4 Shockwave failed to hold serve at home tonight, losing to the Western Conference-leading Seattle Majestics (5-0) 14-6.
