Sirens Avenge Only Loss

The Sacramento Sirens avenged their only loss of the season tonight with a 24-0 home win over the previously undefeated Seattle Majestics tonight. Do-everything back Ashlee Sharp pulled down an interception and got on the scoreboard with a 41-yard scamper and an 87-yard punt return, the highlight of the night. Fullback Kristy Milanese scored on a one-yard plunge. World Championship Gold Medalist Julie "Wicked" Shockley scored from 11 yards out and recovered a Majestics fumble on an earlier kickoff. The Sirens D-Line harrassed Seattle QB Rachel Woods all night long, provoking at least two interceptions, including one on the Sirens goalline to snuff the best Majestics threat of the night. Seattle's one consistent weapon was RB Kalena Firstrider, who was constantly breaking free for first downs when the play seemed stopped. The Sirens' one consistent worry on the night was longsnapping, which caused one PAT to be blocked; one snap went over the holder's head and another went over the head of Shockley as she prepared to punt.

The Sirens improved to 5-1 on the season and are scheduled to travel to Tucson next week to face the 0-6 Monsoon. Sacramento finishes the regular season at home against the undefeated Phoenix Phantomz. Seattle drops to 6-1 and heads home to a bye, after which they close out the regular season at home against the 2-5 Portland Shockwave.

The playoff scenario looks a little sketchy right now. Pending the outcome of PHX-SAC on 16 JUN, the seeds look like THIS tonight: #1 PHX (6-0), #2 Wisconsin Warriors (6-0), #3 SEA (6-1), #4 SAC (5-1). Sac holds the tiebreaker against Seattle, but that matchup against Phoenix is key. Barring a miracle during the last two weeks (i.e. Wisconsin loses to either the 5-1 Madison Cougars or the 2-4 Minnesota Vixen, both of whom have already tasted defeat at the hands of the Warriors), the best Sac can do is grab the second seed (based on head-to-head play) by beating Phoenix. PHX would then take #3 on point differential. If Phoenix wins, Sac will be locked into the #4 seed by record (2 losses).

In other IWFL action, Wisconsin blew out the Rockford Riveters 54-0, Madison shut out the Iowa Crush 25-0, the Arlington Impact beat the Colorado Sting 14-2, the New England Intensity took out the Southern Maine Rebels 31-0, the Philadelphia Firebirds beat the Connecticut Wreckers 34-0, the Baltimore Nighthawks blasted the Erie Illusion 29-12, and the New Hampshire Freedom outlasted the Northeastern (NY) Nitro 20-6. In the Eastern Conference, BAL (6-1) leads the Mid-Atlantic Division, the Atlanta Xplosion (4-1) tops the Mid-South Division, the Montreal Blitz (6-0) are queens of the North Atlantic Division, and the Houston Energy (5-0) fronts the South Atlantic Division.

I hope this link works (it's Facebook, not Youtube), but here is that incredible punt return. The angle is from the pressbox, and certain elements of the sideline get in the way, but it's STILL an amazing sight to see. Ashlee "Razor" Sharp (22) takes this 87 or 88 yards for the score thanks to some outstanding blocking.

From what my drummer friend (the one who shot this video) tells me (and he should know, as he follows various leagues of women's football, including the stupid LFL, from the Bay Area to Utah and SoCal to Seattle), there's a VERY good chance that Jon is correct.

:-(

Here's a more complete highlight package.

There is one sack I'm not sure why it's there; it was flagged for a horsecollar tackle. There are many things I saw better in this reel (like the way Kristy Milanese's 1-yard TD opened up), but I saw that horsecollar call a mile away from my spot on the 50 yard line.

Thanks SH. I had forgotten what watching JV gametape in high school was like.

Hey we need a heads up here. There is a growing interest among a few prominent CS posters to put together a road trip out to Sacramento for a Sirens game. What would be a really good match up to catch, will there be any tickets available and do we need to make reservations for tickets before arrival??

I'll only go if there's also some roller derby going on in town the same weekend. I like to maximize my lesbian worship when I take precious time out of my busy schedule.

I limit my lesbian worship to watching Danica Patrick race. You can't beat watching Danica race NASCAR, unless you're one of the other drivers.

Last home game is 16 JUN vs PHX Phantomz. KO at 6. Tix $10, avail at the gate. No reservations required. Pretty good snack bar at reasonable prices, and reasonably priced souvenirs. Decent cheer squad.

What's reasonable? You California people pay $15/gallon for gasoline. You have no concept of reasonable.
