REPORT: Sox, Dodgers Working On Blockbuster

The Dodgers have engaged the Red Sox in talks that would ultimately send Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez, Nick Punto and Carl Crawford to the Dodgers. Gonzalez and Beckett have both already been claimed by the Dodgers and Carl Crawford has already cleared waivers this month. If the deal does happen Boston would clear over $50 million a year in salary going forward.

If a deal cant be agreed to, Boston is likely to let Beckett go to the Dodgers for nothing.

The Red Sox would get five players in return.

The deal has progressed to the point that the Dodgers are reviewing Crawfords medicals and the Sox are talking to Beckett and Crawford about waiving their no trade clauses

Red Sox have yet to activate Ortiz. If deal is finalized before game Gomez likely plays 1B tonight, if not Gomez will be optioned to Pawtucket to clear roster spot for Ortiz.

James Loney has been scratched from lineup. One of players mentioned in talks who would have to be a PTBNL was just optioned to the minor leagues. Deal could be real close.

The Dodgers wanted Gonzalez, thats who they wanted, they have been trying for weeks. Boston finally said they could have him but they have to take Beckett and Crawford too, the Dodgers bit.

The Dodgers will pay 97% of the remaining money due of a total over $270 million. Thats huge relief for Boston who now have the flexibility to remake the team that has become very unlikable in Boston.

No one wanted to lose Gonzalez, but they couldn't ignore the benefits.

Now if they could find someone gullible enough to take Lackey.

Red Sox need to thank the Twins for this deal. Morneau was pursued by the Dodgers prior to the trade deadline and apparently last week a waiver deal was being worked on, but the Twins wanted too much for Morneau, hence Gonzalez, and the rest is history.

Well I guess we can pencil in Josh Hamilton as a Red Sock next year.

Total housecleaning in Boston: look for the manager next year to be Jason Varitek.
