Since 1995, when the wild card format was introduced, 20 teams finished with sole possession or tied for the best record in the majors. Here is what happened the following year:
■15 of those 20 teams reached the playoffs the next year.
■12 repeated as division champions (most recently: the Philadelphia Phillies, who had baseball’s best record in 2010 and 2011, but finished 81-81 this season.)
■4 repeated as baseball’s best team
■2 won the World Series the following season (2006 St. Louis Cardinals and 1999 New York Yankees.)

Wait a minute, where's the stat on how teams did the following year immediately after a catastrophic, utter collapse in Game 5 of a five game series, at home, in the 9th innning?

"Drew Storen, I'll f-ing kill you man". Nat Fan #6 after the biggest choke in MLB postseason deciding game history.

Nats are going to win well over 100 games next year. We'll see how the postseason experience helps this young team.

Guess it all depends on whether Strasburg can get out of August.

Maybe pitch Strasburg every seventh game so he doesn't pull his va-jay-jay before November.

Maybe the Phils should do the same with Howard, Utley and Halladay.

Rollins says we don't have to.

It's one thing to age and get hurt. It's another to be young and healthy and sit because your GM is scared. Bonehead move, the Nats might still be playing. No guarantee that they make the playoffs next year, you have to seize the opportunities when they present themselves.

We'll see. The Phils were heavy favorites this year. Lots can happen, injuries, off-year, bad luck.

I find it interesting that the only people who think Strasburg should have kept pitching were people who are not Nats fans. I haven't talked to a single Nats fan that thought he should go past the innings limit that was set back in February.

What I find interesting is you can gather
all the Nats fans together for such a conversation at your kitchen table....

Didn't you just say the same exact thing??

Took out "the only people". I could have also just added "I've met" after that phrase to make it an accurate statement.
I listen to a lot of sports talk radio and I have yet to hear a local radio guy or a caller that is a Nats fan disagree with the decision.

If the Nats win a WS in the next few years this move won't hurt as much and the GM will be vindicated.
On the other hand; if the Nats don't make the playoffs next year don't be surprised if a lot of the fans you've spoken to change their stance.

<=99, I win

Let me understand the mindset here? The Nats aren't losing any part of their young team for next season. Jordan Zimmermann will be three years removed from TJ. SS two years removed. Harper won't be a teenager anymore. We had huge amounts of injuries for position players. Morse missing two months, Werth missing three months, Desmond missing a month. Ramos missing the entire year. Zimmerman playing through bone spurs that he will have cleaned up in the offseason and we still won 98 games. A two win improvement is supposed to be unbelievable?

It's very possible, just not likely. You're assuming that all of the things that went wrong last year will be fixed next year. The Nats will face a different assortment of problems next year.
It's not easy to win 100 games, even for a good team
