(Edmonton) Eskimo middle linebacker JC Sherritt has set a new team record for defensive tackles in a season.

In Montreal on Sunday, the second to last game of the season, Sherritt registered his 118th tackle of 2012. He passed middle linebacker Willie Pless, who set a record of 117 in 1998.

Sherritt is now chasing the CFL record of 129 set by Calvin Tiggle of the Toronto Argonauts in 1994.

Last year’s Western Nominee for Rookie of the Year, this season JC has been named Defensive Player of the Week three times and Player of the Month for July, August and September.
He has 119, needs 11 to break the CFL record, with one game to go.

I should add that he accomplished this despite missing a game due to injury. He also has 3 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 5 INTs, and 1 fumble recovery.

My guess would be that even given the CFL's expando-schedule of 18 games, his rate of production would indicate that he stands at least a pretty good chance of swiping the record, particularly if he's a blitzing fiend. I wish him luck.

“It’s an honour,” said Sherritt, the 2011 West Division nominee for rookie

of the year. “It’s so tough with a loss, it just puts things into

perspective, because who cares if you hold records if you’re not winning

championships, right?

“In the long-term, nobody cares about records. Everybody cares about

championships, especially in Edmonton.”

“That’s how I am, and where I’m from, they think the same things,” said the

five-foot-nine, 218-pound Eastern Washington product, who calls Seattle

home. “I don’t want to sound disrespectful, it’s an honour but we’ve got to

win a championship.”
EAGLES SOAR: The same week Sherritt earned his club record, a couple of

fellow Eastern Washington Eagles teammates came up big, with Hamilton

Tiger-cats defensive end Greg Peach scored a touchdown in the final game at

Ivor Wynne Stadium, while Eskimos backup quarterback Matt Nichols threw

three touchdowns in the span of nine minutes in relief work for the injured

Kerry Joseph (finger).

He broke it! New CFL tackles record belongs to JC Sherritt, despite missing a game to injury!
MONTREAL -- In the fourth quarter of Friday night's game at Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton Eskimos linebacker JC Sherritt broke the CFL's single-season tackle record on Friday, passing Calvin Tiggle's record of 129 set in 1994.

He came into the game with 119 tackles, needing 11 to beat Tiggle's mark against the Stampeders.

The 24-year-old Truckee, California native is in just his second season with the Eskimos, and has accomplished the feat despite missing one game due to a knee injury earlier this month.

Before joining the Esks, the five-foot-nine, 218-pound defender attended Eastern Washington, where he played 49 games over four seasons and averaged more than 11 tackles per game as a senior.
More to come...
