Crazy CFL play...

...from a couple of years ago.

They're at the end of a tie game between Montreal and Toronto. It's third down (equivalent to our fourth down) with about 9 ticks left, and the Allouettes are about to kick a FG with the hope that it's either good or goes out the back of the end zone for a roughe. The announcers discuss the Argonauts' likely strategy, which will involve the archaic return kick (still legal) because the ball is required by rule to be returned out of the end zone on pain of a game-ending rouge. Return kicks both ways result in some craziness. I'm not sure exactly why MTL couldn't just have the QB or the punter run around to kill the clock and go to OT or accept a tie. Ultimately, the Allouettes win on a touchdown when the Argos screw up a return kick.

You guys like this way to end a game? It's confusing for USA football fans, but it IS kinda fun....

dal: If Team A fumbles in their own end zone, and it's recovered by Team B, that's a clear touchdown, right? Same situation. Toronto was required under CFL rules to get the ball out of the end zone, they used a free kick and failed, resulting in a Montreal recovery in the end zone. Touchdown.

We'll probably never see this in the NFL because our kickers are USUALLY a bit more accurate (i.e. the original shot at a FG would have ended the game); the shorter US end zone likely would have put the ball over the end line, resulting in a no-score touchback; and even if the kick came down in the end zone, the return kick would likely never come into play (though it IS still legal under US rules) because the defense could just down the ball in the end zone, take the no-score touchback and either run a Hail Mary or take a knee to move to overtime. In US ball, the return kick is rarer than a drop kick.
