A couple things evened out the old-timers and today's pitchers. The lowering of the pitching mound and changing of the knock down pitch. Just think if they raised the mound for today's pitchers. After 1968 the mound was lowered 5 inches. I know your are refering to nasty as good, but the old-time pitchers had the ability to know down batters and not get thrown out of games due to the wussification of the rules. Nolan Ryan pitched from the 1960's thru till the 1990's, and only Verlander has close to his stuff. There are a lot of bad pitchers today too, aka Minnesota Twins.

There are some pitchers that would be good in any generation.

He was awesome, yes. But did he have a career .342 BA, knock in over 2K runs, slug .690, have an OPS of 1.164 (best OPS of all time, BTW), accrue nearly 6K total bases, AND put up a 2.28 career ERA, post nearly 100 wins, put up 20-win seasons TWICE, and throw 17 shutouts?

If Willie didn't do that, then he wasn't the best of all time. Great outfielder, yes. ONE of the best, yes. But there's one that outshone even Willie....

I was thinking the Oriole on the list, as Frank was a great player in his day. MVP in the AL and NL and a Triple Crown.

Griffey Jr. pre injuries was by fat the best baseball player to step on the field.


Starting prior to the 2001 season, when the injuries really started to kick in Jr was on pace to smash Hank Aaron's HR record. He still finished with 630 career home runs (currently 6th), 15th in RBI's, over 2,700 career hits, 184 stolen bases (172 of them before 2001), had some of the best range of any OF in MLB history, top 100 all time of any position player in fielding %, etc...


People will only remember the days in Cinci, which is a shame. When he was in Seattle he was by far the best player in all of baseball.
