Hope Solo just posted a link to a deal where she's signing autographs with other athletes. I'm not thrilled with her asking price, but there are other athletes there charging more. I don't like athletes charging for that, though I have paid in the past. Here's the list. Most of these are either also-rans or retirees that youngsters may not have heard of. Why are they able to still command this kind of cache?

Bet Butterbean's line is longer than Hope Solo's.

If you don't like them selling their autographs, then don't buy one. seems fairly simple.
they aren't required to give their time and effort away for free.

I'd pay the $35 to spit on Roberto Alomar.

Why do people collect autographs again? Never made sense to me.

Happened to have a half dozen baseball signed by Kirby Puckett prior to his death. Was asking $60 each before. Sold them all for $250 each within a couple months. Didn't plan on Puckett dying as he was signing for $20 each at Iowa Cubs fest. This is an exceptions, but when I buy an autograph, I hope to sell it for a profit.

I like a controlled situation like an autograph signing. You can meet the players and talk to them, for instance, met Rich Gannon and talked a little FCS football and he signed a couple items.

And I'm okay with the idea that it's about money/investment. If that's someone's cup of tea so be it. I then just don't want to hear about people complaining how much an athlete is charging to get an autograph nor how athletes don't take the time to give out autographs for free before games or when going to and from their cars at stadiums. Since it's about money, that's like being a pan handler on a street corner and yelling at everyone who doesn't drop change in your cup - people are free to do that, but it doesn't win a lot of sympathy.

A few weeks ago when we went to Vegas....Pete Rose was in a Mandalay Bay sports memorabilia shop signing autographs.......trouble is nobody was in line for any. He sat there for hours with nobody to sign for.........I did pop my head in and yelled "Hey Pete......you ruined baseball more than steroids did". He wasnt happy.

Not many autographs are free. They usually involve buying tickets to an event/game, parking or public transportation to the even, buying an item to get autographed and time taken to get the autograph. Panhandling has much less overhead. There are promotional events, but that gets back to the controlled situation that I prefer. You know what you are getting. Let the kids chase the stars for autographs and dream about the priceless experience of meeting their heroes.
