Chargers FINALLY make a major move!

Fans of the San Diego Chargers have been fed up for quite some time with the quality of their team's play. They thought that might change with the coming of their new coach (Mike McCoy) and GM, but they've been disappointed in the caliber of players signed in free agency. Morning talk show host Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton famously described the Chargers on the air as shopping at the 99 cent store.

This may be changing. In their first major free agent signing in years, San Diego just reeled in Indianapolis star DL Dwight Freeney. He may be on the backside of a stellar career, but he's still got a lot left, and he's likely upset at the way Colts stars have been treated ever since former quarterback Peyton Manning got hurt. Positioning could also be an issue, as he's a natural DE, but was moved to OLB late in his Colts career when they switched to a 3-4 defense, which the Chargers ALSO have.

One guy does not a team make. But this COULD be the first sign of a step in the right direction for a second-tier team with fans who want to get back to the big time.

"Reeled" him in? He was desperate to get a deal with any team.

That's the point, SE. Given that ANY team could have had a shot, why San Diego? Why not a place that could have given him a bigger contract?

You're MISSING the point: No one wanted to give him a bigger contract, hence why he was on the market so long. His expectations were higher than the value teams placed on him. He eventually settled for less than he wanted, but got more than anyone else was going to offer because the Chargers were desperate for pass rush help after Ingram went down.

This. There's a reason the Colts didn't want him anymore. :coffee:

Except that the Chargers have a history of giving up on name players WELL before their time.

Exhibit "A": Junior Seau

Exhibit "B": Drew Brees

Not great for Towson DE Frank Beltre who signed with the Bolts the day after the draft. Although I read they are going to try and make him an OLB.
