True but a lot of his main competition is out. Last year's Olympic 100 finals runners who are out Tyson Gay (failed test), Asafa Powell (failed test), Yohan Blake (injury), and Ryan Bailey (injury) and you have to wonder if injury is really injury. Of those who were in last year's final who will be there, Bolt, Gatlin (back after drug suspension is over), Richard Thompson, and Martina (I think)

Powell, Blake and Gay would have been his 3 biggest competitors and are 3 of the biggest names in the sport.

On the women's side, you have Campbell-Brown and Sherone Simpson at a minimum failed drug tests from the 100m

Agreed this is a perfect time for some young talent to make a name for themselves be on the lookout for a guy named Jimmy Vicaut of French origin he just joined the sub 10(100) club running 9.95-9.96 in the French championships defeating his much more celebrated teammate Christophe LeMaitre.

Yeah he had ZERO speed in the high jump and you might want change your mind on Eaton dominating he has fellow Uncle Sam decathlete Gunnar Nixon breathing down his throat in second place with 4,493 points and Eaton is ahead with 4,502 points right now.Nixon cleared 7-0 in the high jump Eaton only cleared 6-4.

Bolt won in a workmanlike 9.78 his start was not what we are used to seeing from him but his top end speed won it for him over Gatlin!!!

Bolt traditionally is not a good starter and his start was fine today comparing to normal. Bolt wins by his top end speed being better than all others not his start. Gatlin had to start much better than Bolt or he was never going to beat Bolt.

Eaton easily won the decathlon and Dibaba just sat and kicked in the 10k showing she is the dominant female distance runner in the world. Felt bad for the Japanese woman who did all the work by leading for most of the race but finished 5th after getting outkicked in the final 450 behind the top 2 Kenyans and Ethiopians

Flanagan In that 10K final made a big mistake going out to a fast early pace and it showed she doesn't have the stamina to compete with those African runners.The guy ppl need to watch for in the decathlon in the future is Gunnar Nixon he and his 4,493 points were second to Eaton's 4,502 pts.

Was surprised to see Flanagan doing what she did as well. Agree that killed her and put her in no man's land very soon after. She had no chance from there if she ever did in the first place.

That was only 5 points out of 10th and 200 points out of the Bronze. Eaton is a stud and finished with 8809 ahead of Silver by 139 points and ahead of the bronze by 297 points.

Flanagan had no business trying that tactic of playing the role of a rabbit should have stuck in the pack them made her way up front.

Bolt wasn't that far behind the others in that race and that may have been his best start (which is why he so easily got the WR) but if you look at their reaction times, he was still only 6th on reaction time even if they were all close - lanes 1 and 8 were the best and Gay who was next to him was only .002 faster so it's tougher to compare them since he was in the middle.

Let's look at his reaction times in his starts the last 2 years:
Olympics 2012: Round 1: .178 seconds (6th in heat), Semis .180 (last in heat), Finals .165 (5th in hat)
WC 2013: Round 1: .155 seconds (2nd in heat), Semis .173 (6th in heat), Finals .163 (5th in heat)

So the finals today was his 2nd best reaction time in the last 2 years of major races and he consistently is not a great starter but as you said, once he gets going, forget about it if you are someone else. He should have been very happy with his start based on the past 2 years worth of starts.

And if you looked at the articles that I brought out in one of them Bolt agrees. "Bolt admits his weakness is his start, that being the worst (if there is such a thing for the fastest man on earth) part of his race." If you disagree, you are disagreeing with Bolt himself. I don't think anyone in the world disagrees with you on his finishing speed.

When I saw Bolt's race it looked as if he was even at the start with Gay and as stated before he went into overdrive and was gone.Yes his start in Beijing was slow but once he unwound ppl saw the best top end speed in the history of the sport.

The 400 finals will be very interesting for both genders.I picked Francena McCorory to win among the women but Amantle Montsho of Botswana scares me with her strong finishing kick.I saw footage of these two in Lausanne and Montsho could have won that race easily but McCorory held her off barely 50.36-50.37.

Duane Solomon qualified for the men's 800 final running 1:43.87 he is my pick for gold and to finally break Johnny Gray's long standing 27 yr old American mark of 1:42.60!!!!

Based on who has dropped out before the WCs, it should come down to Solomon, Symmonds and Aman. Solomon will take it out hard. For Symmonds to have a chance, he'll have to stay relatively close to Solomon (like he did in his last race and not like he did at USATFs). Symmonds has the best kick of anyone in the field but sometimes he stays too far back and does not give himself enough room to catch up before reaching the end. Aman has the overall best PR coming in although Solomon's season best is .06 faster.

Solomon ran hard in his semifinal although he looked comfortable. Question is how much will that take out of him especially since he will likely be leading the first 500-600 of the race at a minimum which is a tough place to win unless you are clearly the best or others don't have a great strategy. Symmonds "jogged" a 1:45 to qualify in his heat so he should be more fresh.

Too bad Johnson didn't make it as well as he had been running really well up until now but he was first guy out after getting caught in the last 10 meters of his heat by 2 guys including Aman.

Good points about Solomon&Symmonds.Solomon looked fresh in post race interview after his 1:43.87 and Symmonds likes to hang off the early pace and come from behind.In London Symmonds changed his strategy and stayed near the front and produced a pr of 1:42.9.Johnson is somebody to watch for down the road in the 800m he used to be a 400IH guy while in college at UCLA running a time of 48.59 in the NCAA '05 finals as a sophomore.Shocked me that he turned into a 800 runner with potential.

I can't wait until the women's 800 starts there is a young woman I'am picking for the medal podium say hello to fellow NJ native Ajee Wilson.I picked her for bronze in 1:59 or better????
