NFL resumes quiet push for 18/16 schedule
Per a league source, the NFL quietly has resumed its push to persuade the NFLPA to expand the regular-season to 18 game.
If the players continue to refuse to play more than 16 games, the only way to add two games would be to expand the season while limiting each player’s participation to 16 per season. This would require coaches to make often difficult decisions about when to rest each player, twice
The concept would cause strong reactions, in both directions. Though a union source has described the possibility of an 18-game season with a 16-game limit per player as “fascinating,” many fans would disagree. Loudly.
Millions of fantasy football owners wouldn’t be thrilled about it, either. Loudly.

This is ridiculous this game is dangerous enough as it is already and they want these men to put themselves in harms way even more.

How is this "putting them in harm's way even more?" THIS proposal is keeping total participation at 16 games; essentially this amounts to a pro version of the Little League rule: everyone plays during the regular season. For fans, this will look like an extension of what some teams already do during the last week or two: rest the starters to prevent injury.
But you're also forgetting the other end: the START of the season. The idea is to convert a couple of pre-season games into regular season games. Canada already plays 18 games, and we don't hear about player whining about it up there.
I don't like the extra bye, but the 18 games is a GREAT idea. (FWIW, I'm sure we had some of the same whining when the schedule expanded to 16 games, and even when it expanded to 14 games.)
