The Eastern Conference Wild Card race is shaping up to be a huge brawl. Currently there are 7 teams within 3 points of each other fighting for the 2 Wild Card slots. And the Caps and Rangers are only 1 point ahead of the top Wild Card teams.
Let's Go Devils

When was the last time the Devils went a whole season with the same coach?

Avs are sitting not-so-comfortably in the the 5th spot in the west. Not bad after finishing dead last in '12-'13. Good goalkeeping, lots of young talent, and the tutelage of Canadian Jesus.

Under the new format, playoffs are top 3 from each division plus 2 wildcards per conference right?
The whole Patrick (Metropolitan) Division except for Pitt started out like crap this year but has played well lately. 2-7 in that division is only separated by 5 points with teams having played between 46-48 games.

#1 in the LEast would be 3rd in West. 2 of the top 8 teams are in the LEast

Meh. In 2012, the SC Finals pitted #6 from the East vs. #8 from the West. Anything can happen in tournament play.

True. And Western teams like Hongcouver and SJ have a recent history of dominating the regular season then choking in the first or second round. I forsee Anaheim doing it this year.

7 of the last 11 Cup winners reside in the East.
East is 120-116-32 vs the West to date.
As Guido says... meh.

Too bad the Wings were in the West when they won theirs. Make it 5 of 11.

3 of the last 4 from the WEST
5 of the last 7 from the WEST
10 Western teams have winning records against the LEastern teams
6 LEastern teams have winning records against the Western teams.

8 of the top 16 are in each division based on points as of this minutes (still some games going on today).
Wrinkle thrown in this year like every 4 years is the weeks off for the Olympics. Taking time off could make some teams lose momentum they had before. Also, while wanting your country and players' teams to do well you don't want those players to get too much ice time to tire themselves for when it's important in the playoffs (or worse get injured in the Olympics)

Pay up sucker. Avs won in OT.

That's 11 OTL's for the Devils. Thankfully they get a point for each.

Seemed that Gil was talking about strength today. Wings are in the East now. Keep up.

Just looked and saw that the Devils are 0-8 in Shootouts and 6-3 in the 4 v 4 OTs.
In those shootouts they have scored 1 goal in 25 attempts while giving up 11 in 25 attempts. The offensive stats are horrible (worst %). The goaltending stats are extremely bad too (3rd worst %). On average, players have scored 32% of the times this year which means 68% save percentage for the goalies.
If they make it to the playoffs, lucky for them that there are no shootouts. The OTs are 5 v. 5 so the 6-3 records in OTs during the regular season don't mean as much to how they may do in the playoffs.

Their offensive output has been awful for sure. But considering that they started off the season with a 1-9 record, I'm elated that they are in the hunt for the playoffs.

Know what you are saying. I am a Rangers fan and they started 2-6 with none of the 6 going to OT and being outscored 35-8 in those 8 games.
Besides the Pens, the whole division started like crap but now the whole division is playing well. Will be interesting to see the separation if any over the next 15-20 games leading into the final 15-20 games of the season.

The whole East vs. West argument is pointless and unnecessary. I know the west plays a more exciting brand of hockey, but I don't think the East will be any cakewalk. Tampa will get Stamkos and Bishop fully healthy, the Pens and Bruins are tough, and there are enough teams getting their act together (Philly, Washington, NYR, et al.) It's going to be a fun 2nd half when the Olympic break is over.
