I wish I could vote for soccer in the top three...but that's not realistic given our collective disdain for the sport...

I personally love it, and it is clearly my #4 sport...

I actually voted for soccer for 3rd. The reason is the number of youth soccer players out numbers some of the other sports. Baseball is the tough one. Great sport and big fan base, but it is losing steam in my opinion. Also, while a number of people are against racing being a sport, but NASCAR is the fastest growing sport in the nation exceeding football.

You are spot on about the number of youth leagues...here in Northern VA, soccer is everywhere...

But, a recent study shows the county spends 75% more $$$ on softball/baseball fields than soccer fields, yet the soccer fields get triple the amount of use than the softball/baseball fields...

I assume that, as kids get older, the love of soccer falls off because there is little to no TV coverage and most sportscast provide no coverage outside of the few successful MLS markets (DC is one of them)...

I think the drop off is partly because of coverage. But I think what will turn this around is if US Soccer can get a World Cup and start drawing more international players that could change. One other factor would be if one of the channels like TNT, USA, or TBS took a look at hosting a number of Soccer games, we may see this change. But, hell Baseball plays somewhere close to 5 billion games a season. There is only so much TV time to go around.

I knew I was forgetting one. And how many people actually watch golf? I bet it will surprise me because the only thing more boring than watching golf is watching soccer.

As a well dressed and well pressed poster once said ...

F**k Golf!

Soccer's position depends on the context. If you're talking about top 3 professional sports, soccer isn't in the running but if you're talking about the sports most played by America's youth it is definitely in the running.

The DC United coach is the director of the local travel club that my 7 year old is going to try out for if he doesn't play football.

I am watching NASCAR right now and I cannot believe I forgot that one as well. Hell I shouldn't be allowed to make polls anymore. I always dick them up one way or another.

NASCAR definitely deserves to be an option if you're going go put things like soccer in there.....
