One of the major points of a union is to make sure workers aren't held accountable for doing crappy work. Another major point is to make sure they keep getting raises, etc., whether they do crappy work or not. I don't know why ANYBODY would believe union labor should lead to a superior product.

Unions can be guilty of those things but there are also union apprentice and training programs that work very hard at making sure that union members are well trained on the fundamentals through the latest tools and techniques. Open shop training varies by location but can be up to the individual and the contractor.
