Baseball Gloves

I was (for some unknown reason) thinking about this today, as I drove home from work. Do you remember your first baseball (softball) glove? When you got it? Was it a signature or generic? And what happened to it?

Here's mine:

Got mine for my 10th birthday. Up till then I used my brother's hand me downs or dad's old mitt.
Signature - Mel Stottlemyre (replaced in 1977 by Dick Allen)
I still have that first glove.
The second one was stolen from my car, after a game in downtown Austin, about 1985.

I never got a real designated softball glove. When I started playing they didn't have such animals and later I didn't like any of the models.

My first, and favorite glove I ever owned was a Wilson Kirby Puckett signature.

That thing lasted me from age 9 until I was done playing Legion at 17.

My first glove was a signature Ken Griffey Jr. I still use it to play slow pitch, catch, baseball, etc... However, since I was a catcher I didn't use that glove much and it was in pretty good shape until my freshman year of college when I started using it for everything.

My first, catchers pud was a P.O.S., but I was in 5th grade so I delt until my 8th grade year when I got an amazing all Black with silver accients Wilson A2000 Pudge. It is by far the best glove any one can use for a catcher, IMHO. I tried to use other gloves but they never felt right.

Here are some photos...and yes, that is athletic tape holding the strings on the webbing. Apparently catching thousands of pitches, plus random catch, and fielding over 5 years will do some work on a glove...who knew.

I first used my dad's glove from the 1940's to learn how to catch a baseball, then when I made the little league team, I got a cheap Franklin glove, and then a Denny McLain 31 Game winner model. I still have the Franklin and McLain, but my dad's old glove disappeared.

My dad's glove looked like this

Ha, so did my dad's that I used before I got mine. Course dad also had a catcher's mitt as that was his position on 2 straight state champions teams in '40 and '41 before he went into the Navy.

Baseball is in my blood. Unfortunately, girls couldn't play Little League when I started so I did Softball as an organized sport but played baseball with the guys in the neighborhood (all of whom were in some form of organized BB)

I had the same glove. Loved it. Still have it somewhere.

Just wonder if you know who Mel Stottlemyre is/was?

Of course I know who Mel is. He pitched against Gibson in the '64 World Series with the Yanks.

I wish he was still the Yankees pitching coach.

Yes, interesting, no? I was 10 in 65 and we got those gloves for Christmas that year. Just a year after. Not sure if it was my dad's sense of humor after the great collapse of '64. I had no real preference but my sister loved Gibson, even if we were staunch (and depressed) Phillies fans.

I was also wondering if the young 'uns on here knew cause alot of these guys weren't born in 1964/65

Got my first glove @ KMart with a $10 bill I found in the gutter. True story. Still have that glove...a first baseman's mitt that I used to play third base with...until the championship game of Little League against Westside, when their coach complained and they made me use somebody elses' glove after about the 2nd inning. That glove is carried to practice every day by my son (who has about 5 gloves of his own...)

Well we live Montana and we're avid Yankees fans. Doesn't fit, but it's what both him and I grew up with.

My first "real" glove was a Sears Ted Williams model. I think back in the 60's, Sears had a whole line of Ted Williams' stuff in the sporting goods dept.

I still have it, Ted Williams autographed it.
