Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez will have surgery to remove a cyst from his right hip and will be out 10 weeks, Rodriguez's brother told ESPNdeportes.com on Thursday.

Joe Rodriguez, Alex Rodriguez's older brother, told Enrique Rojas of ESPNdeportes.com during a phone interview that immediate surgery was recommended, and that rehabilitation would take about 10 weeks.

A source close to the situation told ESPNdeportes.com that the surgery is scheduled for Monday in Colorado.

There has been no confirmation from the Yankees regarding the scheduled surgery.

On Thursday, Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters he did not have any information regarding Rodriguez.

"I have not heard anything yet," Girardi said. "I will try to go and find out what's going on."

Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo would neither confirm nor deny the report, according to the New York Daily News. "When we have information we'll give it to you," Zillo told the Daily News. "We're not giving out any information right now."

The development also means that A-Rod will not be able to participate with the Dominican Republic team in the World Baseball Classic.

A-Rod will try to play with torn labrum in hip

TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—Alex Rodriguez could count on one thing during the most scrutinized month of his career: His health.

Now even that is a huge question mark.

“He’s very important for us,” New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada said. “You lose a guy like him—we’ve got a good lineup—but he’s the guy that puts it all together.”

Rodriguez will attempt to play this season with an injured right hip, hoping to avoid surgery and a four-month rehabilitation period.

A cyst in the hip was drained Wednesday, and the Yankees third baseman will skip playing for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. Still, he has a torn labrum that might need an operation.

“He’s been through a lot, and you probably can go through the last year that he’s been through a lot,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “He’s been pretty good in staying focused in what he has to do. The thing about Alex, we all know how hard he works. He’s able to do a lot of things because of his work ethic, and you hope that carries him though this year as well.”

Normally it would be worth pointing out that last season Mike Lowell had a injury involving his hip and decided to play it out and he eventually couldnt play and was left off the World Series roster.

However, even when healthy A Rod can never seem to play once the playoffs roll around, so I guess theres no real downside to it....

newyorkyankees.com reports that Cashman is in contact with Rodriguez and his trainer about the possibility of holding off the surgery until after the '09 season. They are discussing whether or not he will be able to contribute significantly during the season or if the injury will cause him too much pain, as it's not the cyst (which was drained) that they are worried about, rather a torn labrum.

As much as I wanna see him play, I think they should do the surgery and let him heal properly rather than potentially risking his career.

Yeah, I'm here for a few minutes. Gotta get up early tomorrow, another day of wrestling for my boys.

I'll try and be here more often. I'm not working right now (and loving it) and wrestling season is winding down, I should have more time.
