Anyone ever heard of it?

Opens play this fall with four teams:

Las Vegas/Los Angeles
New York/Hartford
Orlando
San Francisco/Sacramento

UFL Mission Statement:
"To fulfill the unmet needs of football fans in major markets currently underserved by professional football by providing a high quality traditional football league comprised of world class professional football players. The UFL will serve the communities with pride, dedication and passion, and uphold a leadership role in the development of football worldwide. The UFL will provide every fan with an affordable, accessible, exciting and entertaining game experience."

When will UFL games be played?
The UFL will play in the fall, during traditional football season, to establish the league as a viable entity and will offer real, 11-on-11, outdoor professional football in NFL quality stadiums/venues. The UFL will play its regular season games on Thursday and Friday evenings in the fall, with the first regular season game kicking off in October and the Championship Game tentatively scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend.

UFL is only gonna have a 6 game season. I hope the new USFL happens I loved the old one. We could use a minor league football for the NFL again. At least the USFL wants to play in spring. Playing pro football during the NFL season is dumb. Ask the CFL-USA teams. Oh you don't remember? What a surprise.

I love the CFL... and enjoyed CFL USA... mostly because before and during college we would go to Winnipeg and catch a Bombers game on occasion. Granted... nobody else remembers.

I think there is a huge market for a minor league nfl. played in the spring, in larger markets without the nfl, and some college markets (madison, wi and lansing, mi)

TTBison, you need to play ball with me here, most don't remember. USFL in spring I want. They need 8 teams or else don't bother. How can they do that? No clue, probably won't happen. Bring back the Oakland Invaders!

i think fresno - a large market (top 40), orlando, san antonio, memphis, hartford, los angeles (of course), salt lake city, and either louisville or columbus would all be viable for a minor league... decent tv markets, sizable stadiums, proven football markets (at the college level, and excludes SA)

Shouldn't there also be a team in Detroit?

Former New York Giants head coach Jim Fassel is casting his lot with the United Football League's Las Vegas franchise. The four-team league is set to begin playing on Thursday and Friday nights later this year, and Fassel is its first high-profile coach.

Also, Denny Green and some other well known coach were mentioned on the Terico and Vanpelt show today.

The SF franchise is to play a game in Sac and is rumored to be possibly moving to Sac permanently. SacBuzz was brainstorming names for a relocated franchise. I suggested either resurrecting the old baseball name of Sacramento Solons or just calling the team the Sacramento Hornets on the theory that it worked for the Cleveland/LA/St. Louis Rams, who were named after Fordham University.

I'm not liking the name of the owner of the SF/Sac franchise, though. I'm wondering if he's related to the bloody Speaker and if there's any impropriety in his getting a franchise.

I was also a Stars fan. I still remember their first playoff game when they came from 21 points down in the 4th quarter and beat the Chicago Blitz in OT.

The USFL played good football, unfortunately, the league couldn't survive financially.

The Stars won 2 of the 3 USFL championships, they beat my Invaders 28-24 in the last USFL game for the 1985 championship.

NFL could find new UFL to be a nice development

They've fought off all challengers, several times sending them to the graveyard of dead sports leagues, but this time the NFL might be willing to work with the newest professional football league, rather than crush it.

Why?

It could turn into its minor league.
Some will say the college game is the minor league for the NFL, and, contrary to what some in academia might want to hear, it is. But that's for players who go right into the NFL. What about those who don't make a roster right away?

Say hello to the United Football League.

"We're not going after the star NFL players, but we're going to take guys they let go," said UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue. "Players who are cut in the summer can come play with us."

The UFL will begin play this fall with four teams: Orlando, Las Vegas, San Francisco and New York-Hartford. Each team will play six games.

I, for one, like it. The more football we have, the better it is. But from a player development standpoint, it makes sense for the NFL to embrace it. NFL Europe, which the NFL owned, helped find Kurt Warner and Jake Delhomme.

This league can do that -- only now the NFL isn't footing the bill.

There's always the "other" football. Come to the dark side, my friend. 8-)

The only pro football that means anything at this point is the IWFL. And that starts on 11 APR. I can't wait.

If you're in the area, check out Sacramento @ Modesto at 7 PM 11 APR. The Modesto Maniax are an expansion franchise, so look for the Sirens to clean their clocks.

I will watch the World Cup or US friendly if it is on tv at the bar, but I won't actively search for it.

I do have one of these from 2006.

Sorry, after the US is inevitably eliminated from the tournament, I always pull strongly for Germany, and I still haven't fully gotten over this:
