Yes. We'll have one, unless he breaks a leg coming down the stretch.

I hope we don't. It's better for horse racing to keep the streak alive.

With this Triple Crown thing, why don't they have the biggest races for the fastest horses period, and not just limit it to the fastest 3 year olds?

*Edit GD fat finger typo..'Trie'

I was just on Wiki looking at the fastest times for these races and it makes you realize what a true freak Secretariat was 40+ years ago.

To some people, the Breeder's Cup, which is more wide open age-wise, is the real racing event of the season. The Triple Crown just has all the history associated with it.

Mrs89 loved horses growing up (now loves a horse's ass) and she saved the Washington Post from all three of Secretariat's TC wins.

The Kentucky Derby[edit]
Churchill Downs bettors made the entry of Secretariat and Angle Light the 3–2 favorite in the 1973 Kentucky Derby. (Sham was next at 5–2.) Secretariat broke last, but gradually moved up on the field in the backstretch, then overtook Sham at the top of the stretch, pulling away to win the Derby by 21⁄2 lengths. Our Native finished eight lengths further back in third.[19]

On his way to a still-standing track record (1:592⁄5), Secretariat ran each quarter-mile segment faster than the one before it. The successive quarter-mile times were 251⁄5, 24, 234⁄5, 232⁄5, and 23. This means he was still accelerating as of the final quarter-mile of the race. No other horse had won the Derby in less than 2 minutes before, and it would not be accomplished again until Monarchos in 2001.

Secretariat broke the track record for a mile and a half by 2 3/5 seconds. They measure horse races in fifths of seconds because a fifth roughly equates to a horse length, so he broke the record (which I believe still stands) by about 13 lengths.

Only four horses ran against Secretariat in the '73 Belmont.

Reader's Digest did a story on Secretariat just after he died that you should go find and read if you get a chance. When they did the autopsy on him, they found that he had a freakishly large heart, which probably was part of that endurance and speed.

Yeah, some of that is in the Wiki link I posted. Apparently his closest competitor at the time also had a huge 18 lb heart, but it was dwarfed by Secretariat.

And another thing seems most of the race horses I've seen on TV are black or brown. Not too many white ones. White ones I guess aren't built for speed..
