Obama admin rebuffs D.C.’s efforts to bring back the Redskin

Post by dbackjon »

Efforts to lure the Washington Redskins back to the District have come up against a potentially insurmountable challenge: the Obama administration’s objections to the team’s name.

Interior Secretary Sally Jewell told D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser this spring that the National Park Service, which owns the land beneath Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium, was unlikely to accommodate construction of a new stadium for the Redskins unless the team changes its name.

Jewell oversees both national park land and America’s trust and treaty relationships with Native American tribes.

Her decision not to extend the District’s lease of the RFK land badly hinders Bowser’s bid to return the Redskins to D.C. — and boosts efforts to lure the team across the Potomac to Northern Virginia.

The stadium is less than 20 years old.

Crazy to build another one.

What the heck does the Obama Administration have to do with the way the District is run? The District is a private entity that's not part of the Federal Government.

Have you ever attended a game there?

1. It is a nightmare to get to and away from. There is no metro station there. Parking in the satellite lot cost me $30 ten years ago. It wouldn't surprise me if it's $50 now. Then you shuttle in. There is no priority lane for the shuttles out. They wait in the same line on the road out as all the VIP parking passes. It took over an hour just to get back to my car.

2. The place has all the excitement of a mausoleum. Massive and soulless.

3. It was one of the first of the new round of stadiums and it was a whiff. It doesn't have the great video boards, restaurants, and amenities that the new millenium stadiums have.

It's a collosal failure, much like the teams that have played in it.

Oh no, Batman. You should go read about how congress runs DC.

Agreed with most of what was said but there is a metro somewhat close (Morgan Blvd on Blue/Silver line is just over a mile walk) which many do and is probably the quickest to get in and out of the area. Not saying a mile is great but it doesn't feel terrible before and after games especially when you are walking faster than the cars are driving around you.

Good. That (playing) field is atrocious. It's up there with Soldier Field as one of the worst in the league.

This.
I've been a huge Skins fan all my life, but I stopped going to that stadium about 10 years ago. It's just a money/time/fun suck. It's because of that stadium (oh, and the fact that the Skins suck almost every year) that Skins fans have gained the reputation as the new asshole fans of the NFC East. It's just miserable. I hate that place.

Yesterday was the 1st I heard of the Skins talking about a new stadium. How far along & how realistic is it that they would move?

Did you just say walk two miles in December to see the Redskins?

100% that they will build a new stadium and move away from Landover in the next 5 years. FedEx has to be the worst stadium ever built and the traffic for games is unbearable. I get offered free tickets several times a year and there is no way in hell I'll ever go to another game there.

My guess is they will move into DC to the RFK site. They will figure out a way to make that happen.

I'll give the DC darkies some credit. As bad as that team has been for almost 25 years, they love 'em some Redskins. There really was magic at the old RFK with the hogs and the bouncing bleachers. I sort of fear a Redskins stadium that is fun and accessible and in the district again. I also fear Dan Snyder could sell the team to a competent owner some day. I hope he lives a long life and holds on to the Skins.

No. It was crazy to build one in Maryland. But that was Jack Kent Cooke and long before Maryland went off the deep end with the anti-business stance.

JKC built FedEx in a rush before he died. It shows. Its a piece of crap from the very opening game. Little Danny wants a Super Bowl and his stadium will be bigger than Jerry Jones'. Write it down.
"Elaine, you're from Baltimore, right?"
"Yes, well, Towson actually."
