Philadelphia 76ers 7 Year Plan

Dr J spilled the beans on the 76ers strategy beginning in 2012.
LAS VEGAS – Julius Erving, speaking on Sirius XM NBA Radio Wednesday, said the 76ers timeline to field a formidable team is seven years.
“Well when they acquired the team in 2012, maybe, I think the talk was about seven years. Seven years,” the Sixers great told the radio show hosts. “So I think it’s still on that same timeline.”
Erving was asked if the seven-year timeline was to make the playoff.
“No. To be good,” he responded. “ To be good. To be formidable. To be a contender. That’s probably the 2018-19 [season], right?”

No real surprise there. The writing is clearly on the wall that we should be a pretty decent team when Saric comes over from Europe in 2017-18. Maybe we scratch into the playoffs in 2016-17, get really good in 2017-18, and then can take a crack at a title for the next few years after that. I think there are 4 first round picks in the draft next year (say we hit pay dirt on 2 of them), coupled with Okafor and Noels right now, Saric in two years, and that's 5 legit players, and that doesn't even include Embiid or Stauskas. The Sixers have stayed out of free agency because winning now is the priority, so after next year we can actually start thinking about that again. Put all that into the fact that the Eastern Conference is wide open and seeing the Sixers in the NBA Finals in 2018-19 is very realistic. Go Hinkie.

Read an ESPN article yesterday about the difference between the Sixers vs the Suns approach. Sounds like a long haul for Sixers fans, but with a plan.

If Philly is really willing to do this for five, six, or seven seasons, it almost cannot fail. It will either land a superstar or draft so many good players that they will gather a solid NBA team. Brett Brown may check himself into an asylum before then, but if you keep getting lottery picks, you will eventually succeed. Even when Philly was on the clock at no. 3, it was on the phone with teams in the lower half of the lottery, working to secure another high pick, according to league sources.
Philly needs to nail the draft, because big-time free agents don’t appear willing to consider the Sixers until they start winning a respectable number of games. Some agents have even called around to other teams, trying to ignite trade talks that would get their players out of Philadelphia, according to several league sources.
The free-agency route is likely closed to them for now, and they just aren’t good enough to flip their massive pile of trade assets for a star with only one or even two years left on his contract. Why would that guy stay?
Philly’s owners know this, which is why they trust a process they can shape more than “normal” teams like Phoenix will ever be able to shape free agency or the trade market. But you can only do that if the owners let you.

Chicken and egg of course, except in this case, we know what came first. We have been tanking, and will tank again this year. Everyone knows it, so why would a prize free agent come here? We'll be much more attractive after the 2016-17 season and then it will be a different story.

Iggy never would've won in Philly because in Philly he was the star. He's not that type of player. He's a fantastic defender and great teammate, but he would've won too many games for Philly in the past few years when we've been tanking. Rather than Okafor we would've ended up with a future role player. Trust the process.

If you can stick around for another 3-5 years you may get another memory. Trust in Sam.

They better keep Robert Covington right now he is arguably their best player one of the leagues best deep shooters!!!!!!
