Nike has a right to do it but they probably lost more than they gained in doing so.

I sincerely doubt it. Nike disproportionately targets young people in their advertising and young people—even conservatives—are overwhelmingly tolerant of gay people. Not to mention there's the general bad PR which comes from having a spokesman that says a certain class of people are "worse than animals."

He should have referred to them as, "worse than pack animals." That way, people would be confused as to whether he was calling out gay, black, gang yutes or just regular old fudge packers, and it would have divided the controversy.
