NHL Playoffs

Post by 89Hen »

Caps clinch President's Trophy last night, Flyers won to stay in a tie for the 8th spot and the Pens looking like they might be the team to beat right now in the East. Kings and Ducks are coming back to Earth while the Blues have suddenly become unbeatable (shit, can't even score a goal on them).

If the playoffs started today:

Caps v Flyers
Rangers v Pens

Panthers v Islanders
Lightning v Bruins

Stars v Wild
Blues v Blackhawks

Kings v Predators
Ducks v Sharks

That's a pretty damn good lineup for the first round

Easily the most grueling playoffs in all of sport. That's why I don't start paying attention until right about now. The regular season is basically meaningless. Seeding could be accomplished in 40 games.

Kinda amazing that the Caps clinched their division, the conference and the President's trophy before a single other team in the Eastern Conference even clinched a division spot

Would make losing in the first round pretty funny

Yep

Same could be said for baseball (half the games)

But $ is the reason they play so many games, not so they can get to the playoffs quicker and shorten the season

Avs are hanging on by a thread right now, but a win over the Blues tonight, and a regulation loss by the Wild would put them right back in it.

You could cut most sports regular seasons down with the exception of football.

If you did stop after 40 this year it would have been...

Caps v Bruins
Islanders v Rangers

Panthers v Devils
Red Wings v Canadiens

Stars v Predators
Blackhawks v Blues

Kings v Wild
Coyotes v Canucks

Canadiens got crushed ever since Cary Price went down. 17-4-2 by the game that he got injured. 17-32-4 ever since.

Funny thing is if you are in the West and have 90 points, you have already qualified (kind of - San Jose in Pacific has 90 and is in, Nashville has 91 in the Central and is 2 to 3 points from going because only WC spots are now available in the West). 6 of 8 spots already clinched with just the WC spots to go

In the East, none of the 4 teams in the 90s (Caps are 113), have clinched and you would need 99 points to clinch a spot right now.

Couldn't have happened to nicer fans. Damn frogs were sitting behind me at the Caps game a few weeks back. Yapping and yapping until the game got close in the final minutes, then yapping again as folks were walking out. I gave the a big smile and thumbs up and as they started to smile back and raise a hand to waive I said nice and loud "Have fun watching the playoffs on TV." and they nearly shat themselves.

Will the Red Wings streak end at 24? I'm starting to think so. April 6th could be important.

I've seen the Flyers get themselves in a "choking situation" against Detroit before.

Good news is the Bruins keep losing too (3-6-1 last 10), so even if the Red Wings wake up, the Bruins could find themselves on the outs. Isles and Pens both win in shootout last night which almost puts any thoughts of catching them to rest. Flyers have a lot of games against playoff teams remaining. Good news tonight is Caps have nothing for which to play. They should be resting starters.

Boston 88 pts with 5 left
Red Wings 87 pts with 5 left
Flyers 87 pts with 7 left

They just need to stay in front of one of them.

Wow
I'd be embarrassed if I were Canadian...but then again, if I were Canadian I'd have no pride and no self-esteem, so it wouldn't really matter.

Canadians are used to hearing that from...well, from anyone that's not Canadian

Seriously, without the close proximity to the US, Canada would probably be part of Greenland right now.

Just looked up the schedules and shit is interesting.

Boston has 3 home (Carolina, Detroit, Ottawa) 2 away (St Louis, Chicago)

Detroit has 2 home (Minnesota, Philadelphia) and 3 away (Toronto, Boston, NY Rangers)

Philadelphia has 4 home (Washington, Ottawa, Toronto, Pittsburgh) and 3 away (Pittsburgh, Detroit, NY Islanders).

Interesting finish coming up. :thumb:

But not a single one of their teams will be playing in the playoffs this year....
what a shitty representation of their 'national' sport. They should be embarrassed...

 Caps certainly weren't playing like they had the PT sewn up. The fact that they brought it and the Flyers still won is a good sign for the Flyers. The only bad thing is their schedule is brutal... to be honest, it's really not even fair. Three back to back sets (one because of snow storm) with barely a day off... then they get to start a 7 game series if they can get through the gauntlet. I've never seen such a tough game schedule to end a season. Giant game looming next Wednesday in Detroit.
